In Defence Of Married At First Sight’s Nikita

Her straight-talking personality divided the internet– but does she have the right to be picky?

At last, wedding bells are finally ringing for 16 singletons! Married at First Sight UK has officially started, and the first episode did not disappoint.

We were introduced to our groups of brides and grooms as they prepared to say ‘I do’ - and there were clearly some stand out personalities.

Nikita was the name that immediately took over my Twitter timeline. She practically exploded onto our screens with her bubbly nature and Geordie accent.

During her first meeting with the group, her fellow brides did not seem to warm to her straight away.

Morag said,’ So Nikita – she’s a little bit overwhelming.’ Megan echoed this opinion, saying, ‘I think it’s clear with Nikita that she’s just a lot.’

That Nakita came across as someone who will be a big talking point this series and will cause drama was somewhat solidified when she sat down with relationship expert Paul C Brunson as he tried to get a feel for her perfect match.

‘I’ve got to be with someone really hench. So, they’ve got to have, like a big back, big shoulders, big arms,' Nikita claimed, asking if that made her shallow (the internet agreed that it did).

However, this partnership is ‘till death do us part’, so if she is picky can we REALLY hold this against her?

We are all for women going for what they want, but if the list gets too long then suddenly they're just too fussy?

Expert Melanie Schilling made an interesting point when she concluded, ‘I do wonder with Nikita if she’s being self-sabotaging here where she’s setting the bar so high that no one’s actually going meet it.’

She continued, ‘Sometimes rather than giving someone who they ask for, we give the who they need.’

They ended up matching Nikita with business developer Ant hoping he could be a ‘grounding force’ in Nikita’s life.

When it was time for Nikita to walk down the aisle to meet Ant, her face said it all.

Of course she should have been kinder to Ant when she first approached the altar. They were both faced with this awkward situation and if she was warmer they could have helped each other through it.

However I do think she’s putting on a façade to protect herself- as the episodes go on I think we will see that her bark is bigger than her bite.

Plus, Nikita is the embodiment of the classic stand-out reality show character: the outspoken woman who normally creates chaos but in the end finds her calm.

Like her or not, these are the characters that carry the show. Of course, we love watching the classic love story (and I am sure we will also have that in a few perfect couples) but in the world of reality TV it will not all be rosy. Characters like Nikita on reality TV are flawed, layered, and dare I say it - more memorable.

Married at First Sight continues tonight at 9pm on E4!
