Best Crib Bedding Sets

One of the most important purchases you will make as a parent is your child's crib bedding sets. It may not be as exciting as picking the perfect crib or cot bed, but the right bedding is the key to making your child's bed comfortable. The right sheets can mean the difference between a good night's sleep and a very irritable, tired baby (and, of course, if your little one is tired, chances are you will be, too).

According to NHS guidance, your little one should sleep on a firm surface without a pillow before 12 months. This means all of the comfort comes from the cot mattress and bedding. Finding a crib bedding set that is breathable and hypoallergenic is of the utmost importance, and of course, bonus points if it looks great.

Crib bedding is crucial for ensuring your baby's well-being, as it directly impacts their sleep quality. The right crib bedding should provide a cosy, secure environment, that promotes restful sleep and aids in healthy growth and development. Additionally, high-quality, breathable materials can help regulate temperature and reduce the risk of allergies, contributing to a more hygienic and safer sleeping space.

Best silk crib bedding set

Price: £80.00

Silk bedding is great for people of all ages, especially babies who spend most of their time sleeping. The silk reduces friction, which can help prevent hair breakage, shedding and bald spots from developing as your baby sleeps. It's worth noting that hair loss in babies is normal, and grows back within a couple of months.

Silk fitted sheets are also good for your baby's skin, as they contain natural proteins and amino acids that are less likely to irritate the skin.

Online customers found the mulberry silk sheets were effective at preventing matting, especially for children with curlier hair. Others commented on the thinness and the sizing of the sheets, as they don't fit all cribs with deeper mattresses so it's worth measuring the depth before you buy.

Pros

  • It helps prevent hair loss
  • Great for skin
  • Multiple sizes and colours

Cons

  • Some customers found that the bedding sets were a little thin

Best oval-fitted cot bed sheet

Oval cots have increased in popularity but require a different type of cot bedding sheet. The Disney Stokke Sleepi fitted sheets are by far our favourite. The adorable design features Mickey Mouse, which looks great in most nurseries and reminds us of our childhood. This premium bedding set is made from 100 per cent cotton and feels luxurious.

These sheets were designed for the Stokke Sleepi Bed, but when we tested them, they did fit other oval mattresses (however, as always, check the specifications). If you have the larger Stokke Sleepi cot bed, opt for the Stokke Sleepi Bed Sheet.

Pros

  • Washes extremely well
  • Premium quality
  • It's approved and certified free from hazardous substances

Cons

  • It will not be suitable for all cribs - designed for the Stokke V3 but does fit other oval cribs

What should parents look for when choosing crib bedding?

Sleep and wellbeing expert, and founder of The Sleep Nanny, Lucy Shrimpton, advises that safety and comfort should be your top priorities when selecting crib bedding for your little one, "Look for bedding that fits snugly around the mattress to prevent any loose fabric, which can pose a suffocation risk."

"Ensure that the crib sheet has deep pockets and strong elastic to stay securely in place. Opt for simple designs without buttons, ribbons, or other decorative elements that could become choking hazards. Finally, choose bedding that is easy to clean, as you’ll need to wash it frequently."

Are there any specific materials or fabrics that are safer for infants?

All of the crib bedding sets we recommend are made from natural materials, as they provide the safest sleeping environment for your little one.

Baby and child sleep consultant, Jaya Walji (@sleep_likeababy), explains why this is important: "It's recommended to choose crib bedding made from breathable, natural fibres that allow for airflow and won't trap heat or moisture.

"Some safe and comfortable options include cotton, bamboo, and muslin. These fabrics are gentle on the baby's skin and can reduce the risk of overheating or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)."

Jay warns parents to avoid synthetic materials like polyester or nylon, as they can trap heat and may contribute to a higher risk of SIDS.

What are the benefits of using organic or hypoallergenic bedding materials?

Hypoallergenic and organic materials are gaining popularity as people seek safer, healthier options for their homes and families. However, you might wonder how crucial these materials are when choosing your baby's bedding.

"Using organic or hypoallergenic bedding materials offers several benefits for your baby. Organic bedding is made without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals, creating a healthier sleep environment," explains Lucy.

"Hypoallergenic materials, on the other hand, are designed to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. These options are particularly beneficial if your baby has sensitive skin or a family history of allergies. They can help reduce the incidence of skin irritations, respiratory issues, and other discomforts, ensuring your baby sleeps peacefully."

How often should babies’ bedding be changed or washed?

As parents, the washing pile seems endless, so we are all guilty of forgetting to wash bedding as frequently as we should. But Jay explains that we should prioritise washing our child's bedding.

"Babies' bedding should be washed at least once a week, or more often if it becomes soiled or stained. Washing bedding after every nappy change is also recommended, as the urine can seep into the fabric and cause odours. Additionally, if your baby has a nappy rash, it's best to wash it immediately to prevent the spread of bacteria and maintain a clean and hygienic environment."
