Almost as soon as ITV announced Piers Morgan’s long overdue departure from Good Morning Britain, speculation about who might replace him as Susanna Reid’s co-host was rife. For this morning’s show, Ranvir Singh replaced Piers Morgan much to viewers approval. But now, social media campaigns are starting for a whole host of people, from Ranvir to Richard Madeley.
Alex Beresford
So, who is in the running to replace Piers Morgan on GMB? Well, if fans have anything to say about it, Alex Beresford will be up there. The weatherman who had Piers bang to rights regarding his comments about Meghan Markle received tons of support with many now pointing to him as the perfect replacement. As the only man whose managed to make Piers walk off set – something he condemns others for doing – when he brought up the fact Meghan rejected Piers years ago, he seems a worthy host for saying what Britain is really thinking.
Jameela Jamil was among the first to put him forward, with Jamelia echoing her statement on social media. But now, Paddy Power are weighing in on the odds of certain people hosting the show. Beresford has a 6/1 chance of becoming the permanent host, they said, as a popular presenter among viewers even more so now, plus he’s an ITV favourite in general even competing on Dancing on Ice.
Richard Madeley
But it’s Richard Madeley that is favourite to take the job, at least according to Paddy Power. Not only is he a veteran of live TV, he has filled in for Piers a number of times and remains popular with viewers so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was asked to take the role.
Ben Shepard
Ben Shephard has also been thrown into the mix, with Paddy Power giving him a 6/1 chance too, given he’s been a familiar face on ITV since 2000. He hosts GMB on Thursday and Friday already, although it’s safe to say he has a very different presenting style to Piers Morgan. It could be that ITV would relish that opportunity, but given polarizing figures equal high ratings, it seems they may veer towards someone more outlandish for the role – hopefully though, someone outlandishly good, as opposed to ignorant.
Trisha Goddard
Trisha Goddard certainly knows how to hold an audience, and has a 10/1 chance of replacing Piers according to Paddy Power. It was her takedown of Piers earlier this week that garnered tons of support from GMB viewers, plus she is a regular commentator on the show. We know she can host chat shows, so why not GMB?
Ranvir Singh
Unfortunately, Trisha is the only woman included on Paddy Powers long list of odds, completely ignoring Ranvir Singh who is a huge fan favourite.
Other options in the running, according to the betting agency, include Eamonn Holmes, Bill Turnbull and Jeremy Clarkson (which, to be fair, would be quite funny given how much Piers despises Jeremy.) Social media users have also called for Danny Dyer, Femi Oluwole and Kelechi Okafor as potential replacements.
Ultimately, it seems viewers are desperate for a change – and whether Paddy Power bets on it or not, there’s no denying having Piers be replaced by someone who is not a white, older, privileged man would be incredible not just for viewers, but for the actual content of the show. This is the prime opportunity for ITV to better represent Britain by providing a host whose experience of the world – and therefore commentary on news story – isn’t one we’ve already bore witness to 1000 times before.
As Piers himself once said, a sacking is an opportunity – and hopefully GMB will do the right thing with theirs.
