A new study by eharmony has revealed the most attractive pictures to heterosexual men and women on dating apps. Unsurprisingly, the results reinforce many a problematic gender stereotype.
According to the research, which studied the preferences of 1000 members of the general public, men still find women who post bikini pictures most attractive while women prefer men holding a child or baby.
The least attractive? To men, sporty pictures, straight-on-face pictures or those where you’re not smiling. For women however, topless pictures, filtered images and full body shots put them off most in terms of attractiveness.
Yes, we’re sighing too. Not only does this research suggest we’re all basic bitches, it shows that men still base your attractiveness on how your body looks – as opposed to, you know, the face they’ll have to look at every day – and women are still apparently baby-crazy.
But, get this, even if you adhere to these painfully male-gaze-centered ideals, you still might not get a date. ‘Our photography experiment suggests women who pose in bikinis are considered the most attractive but not necessarily the most dateable,’ Rachael Lloyd, relationship expert at eharmony said in a press release.
In fact, the most datable women according to both men and women were those who posed with animals. Because you know, you can’t possibly be a nurturing person if you’re in a bikini. You must hold a puppy at all times lest you be a careless, heartless bitch.
Clearly, men still subscribe to the whole ‘shag material’ versus ‘wife material’ narrative that means if you wear less clothes on your dating profile you are suddenly only a sex object to them and not worthy of any serious relationship.
And to that we say, ‘SEE YA PAL’. Because, if men are still so ignorant to assume anything about your datability based on a bikini picture, we’re good looking elsewhere.
If you can’t marry me at my bikini picture, you can’t marry me holding a puppy either.
