Are Interiors Influencers Giving You Unrealistic Expectations For Your First Home?

Kitchen islands and en-suites aren't a given for most people...

Womans bathroom

The marble kitchen island, the extravagant wood-burning fireplace, the spacious en-suite bathroom. These are the home features many of us dream of, and so naturally, they’re all over the Instagrams of interiors influencers.

Like travel influencers, fashion bloggers and fitness gurus – this has one unfortunate outcome: it creates unrealistic expectations of one's living standards. Just like most of us don’t have the leave to be on Thai beaches every month, the bank accounts to buy new Gucci trainers each week or the spare time to be in the gym every day – the average Instagram user can’t afford to emulate the life of an interior influencer.

But unlike other influencers where our own limits are obvious from the outset, many of us haven’t been privileged enough to understand the home-owning process, and thereby the ability to decorate said home. The majority of Instagram users are aged between 18 and 29, sitting in the demographic also least likely to own a home according to government research. As a result, many of those venturing into the home-ownership process are quickly disappointed by what’s actually available to them.

According to research by retailerHillarys, the average 21-30-year-old buying their first property rejects 5.4 homes on average – searching for four months before settling on a property. For 80% of the participants studied, an unappealing aesthetic was the main reason they dismissed a home. Similarly, 74% consider themselves overly fussy when it comes to picking a home. Over one-third agreed that they had unrealistic expectations after looking at interiors influencers.

More than half wanted large kitchens, 38% a working fireplace and nearly one third an en-suite – these were the features they often saw online that failed to become a reality. It seems, once again, the average Instagram user is being foiled by what they think is a normal lifestyle, when it’s actually quite exceptional.

‘What those polled probably don’t quite realise is the amount of time, effort, money, editing and “gifted” items that go into creating the perfect Instagram content,’ Lucy Askew, spokesperson for www.Hillarys.co.uk, said in a statement. ‘By holding these unrealistic expectations and waiting for the perfect instagrammable house to turn up, there is every chance that buyers are dismissing what could work out to be the perfect first homes.’

Perhaps then, there is a market for a new brand of influencers who show the process of decorating a home from its humble beginnings? Or, will we move into an age where authenticity online spreads into interiors, and influencers begin showing their messy rooms alongside their ‘Instagram corner’ in an effort to appear more relatable?
