This morning, Rebel Wilson was one of the most searched celebrities in the UK. Why? Because she’d posted a selfie on Instagram and as has become typical in the last year, that meant a surge in people talking about her weight-loss.
Almost immediately, ‘How did Rebel Wilson lose weight’ became a breakout search term under her name. ‘Mayr method diet plan’ – the name of the diet she supposedly followed in order to lose weight – was also up in search by 300%. We tell you this all of this not to share the information, but to ask the question: why is Rebel Wilson’s weight loss method still all anyone can talk about?
Yes, it’s fine to wonder and research healthy ways to lose weight, if that’s what’s medically beneficial to you, but looking at the sheer volume of these search results, the intrigue into her diet plan at the post of every single picture, it’s bordering on obsession.
For Rebel, it’s far removed from what she’s actually posting. In fact, she’s generally stayed quiet about her particular diet plan. Yes, she’s celebrated her milestones, showed herself exercising and enjoyed posting about getting fitter online, but as a rule she very rarely shares what she’s actually eating to lose weight.
You can see why, not only would it be incredibly triggering for some of her followers who may suffer from eating disorders – but it also feels unnecessary at a time when so many are striving for body acceptance, neutrality or positivity at any size.
The Mayr Method is also, quite controversial. We won’t go into the details, but reading the plan as someone who is acutely aware of how non-intuitive eating can turn into an obsession, some of the tactics used to promote ‘mindful eating’ were extremely uncomfortable. Nutritionists have agreed, with some likening some of their tactics to 'disordered eating'. Check out these nutritionists on Everyday Health and Eating Well for more information on that.
Of course, whether Rebel Wilson’s diet method was controversial or not, the fact she’s remaining quiet about it is all we should really note. Clearly, she doesn’t want to talk about how she lost weight, or particularly promote her diet plan, so why can’t the rest of us let it go?
Much like the attention Adele gets whenever she posts a picture – who, coincidentally, comes up under the mayr method search despite having no affiliation to it – it’s time we stop discussing Rebel’s weight-loss whenever she dares to show us her more slender face. It might be a big part of her life, but it’s not her whole life – and it shouldn’t be anyone’s.
The more we hyper focus on celebrity weight-loss, their diet plans and their ‘before and after’ pictures, the more we embed diet culture into our society. In turn, not only are we impacting the harrowing levels of eating disorders in this country, but internalising fatphobia that only serves to harm all of us. So, perhaps instead of scouring for how Rebel Wilson lost weight at every turn, we just let her… I don’t know… post her selfie and go?
