Alec Baldwin has deleted his Twitter account after facing the wrath of Gillian Anderson’s fanbase. For the second time this year, the actor has been forced off Twitter because of the drama surrounding his wife, Hilaria’s, ever-changing Spanish/American accent.
Last week, when Gillian Anderson won Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Golden Globes, her acceptance speech riddled some. A woman we have long seen on British TV speaking in a British accent suddenly sounded completely American, causing ‘Is Gillian Anderson British or American?’ to peak as a search question on Google.
FYI, she was born in the US, moved to London aged one and then back to the US again aged 11 – so her accent clearly has clearly been influenced by both Britain and America. In fact, when interview by Jimmy Kimmel in November last year, he said the American accent he knew her to have had changed to be more British to which she replied 'Well, my original accent was English, that was my first accent - I was an English child until I moved to Michigan.'
As reporters covered the story this week, Baldwin took the opportunity to justify his wife’s changing accent, tweeting a link to a CNN article about Anderson with the caption ‘Switching accents ? That sounds…fascinating.’
A pretty harmless tweet in the grand scheme of things, but not according to Anderson’s fans. They noted that it’s not exactly a fair comparison given Hilaria Baldwin’s sporadic Spanish accent comes not from spending years of her life living in Spain – she was raised in the US and simply holidayed there annually – but because she grew up in a bilingual household and says Spanish culture was a big part of her upbringing. That being said, she has American parents.
Accused of being petty and spiteful, Baldwin was ran off the app pretty quickly as backlash began to rise against his tweet. Soon after, he posted a video to Instagram explaining why he deleted Twitter.
In the 10 Minute IG post, Baldwin said he is a ‘huge fan’ of Anderson’s, before adding: ‘But I find that, of course, on Twitter, which is where all the assholes in the United States and beyond go to get their advanced degrees in assholiness, that I had used it as a news aggregator. And I suppose I will do my best to find other places that are similar in their news aggregation in real time and periodicals I like.
‘The problem with Twitter is, there was a lot of haters,’ he continued.
Meanwhile, Anderson has remained unbothered, not commenting on the drama and instead posting swipe up links to purchase her daughter Piper Maru’s latest artwork – a Queen if we ever saw one.
We don’t imagine the drama will much continue then, Baldwin learning his lesson not to mess with Anderson’s army of fans. Perhaps he should just let his wife do the talking when it comes to her personal scandals, in whatever accent she cooks up that day…
