If you’re inclined towards minimalist interiors but bored of stark white backdrops, may we suggest that you get on board with concrete ASAP?
The humble building material has emerged as a stealth interior trend in the last year or so, and it's a real rarity: a form of Pinterest-friendly home decoration that's instantly striking but is also highly durable (it's literally concrete, so is built to last) and pretty affordable, too (especially when compared to stone tiles such as marble).
It's also an incredibly versatile material. Though concrete does lend itself especially well to a more industrial aesthetic (we're talking exposed wiring, hanging lights, a touch of white-washed brick - you know the drill) it's easy to play around with different finishes to create a look that's all your own. Tiled or poured? Wall-to-ceiling or accent feature? Smooth surface or a textured finish?
Though you might initially think that concrete could make your space feel cold or forbidding, when the trend is done properly, the opposite is arguably true. Juxtaposed with cosy soft furnishings, a concrete backdrop is instantly inviting (concrete features are a mainstay of Scandi interior design, after all).
Styling concrete is all about playing with juxtapositions: a concrete backdrop can easily be warmed up further with the addition of wooden accents and well-chosen lighting (look out for modern styles with an industrial feel - copper makes a particularly pleasing contrast), while contrasting concrete tiles with other patterned stone effects can also pay off, too.
And did we mention how good it looks with a smattering of houseplants?
