This Newest Denim Trend Proves That Jeans Aren’t, And Never Will Be, ‘Boring’

I'll die on the hill that an outfit involving a good pair of jeans is never boring, and it's fair to say I've had my trials and tribulations when it comes to denim. There's just something about it that makes it so hard to nail. Often when the fit around the waist is right, the length is too long (I'm 5'4"), or when the length is perfect (for once), the waist is wrong. Either way, finding a pair of jeans that actually fits is somewhat harder than it needs to be. Saying that, it's not all bad news, as once you've found a good pair of jeans, you'll soon realise denim is never boring (and also to hold onto them, tight).

If you're feeling uninspired by your own jean selection and you're looking for something a little more au courant, think about adding a pair of crossover waist jeans to your wardrobe. Spotted on the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian, jeans that feature a crossover waist, or asymmetric front aren't necessarily a new concept, but it's Zara's TRF Wide-Leg High-Waist Jeans With Crossover Waist that has got people talking about the style once again.

Zara's take on the trend features a high-waisted and wide-leg fit, as well as a choice between two very tempting denim washes: one lighter blue and one darker. The legs are described as 'extra long', which is something to watch out for, particularly if you're like me and are on the shorter side (I just know my usual tailor can't wait to see me coming with a pair of these).

There are so many ways to wear jeans, none of which are boring, and all of which are suitable for every occasion you've got lined up this summer. Take a trip back to the 2000s by styling your crossover jeans underneath a dress, and finish the look with a pair of ballet flats. Alternatively, if you're often inspired by the outfits you see on The Row, wear the jeans with a thin knit that's layered over the top of a cami slip (perhaps this Zara one). Or, if you're looking for an outfit formula you can wear one hundred times and still reach for it for outfit number 101, pair a white t-shirt with the crossover jeans and flip flops.

So are Zara's crossover waist jeans the denim shake-up we didn't know we needed? Absolutely. Just when you think denim might just be running out of ways to reinvent itself, along comes a waistline that we most definitely never saw coming. Last year was all about barrel-leg jeans, and before that, it was distressed denim that was trending (although it had grandads across the country asking 'did you fall over?') But, if both of those felt slightly too daring, the crossover waist is the trend to invest in - it's a subtle switch-up that doesn't cross the line.
