Like a trench coat, a pair of ballet pumps or a white T-shirt, a great leather jacket is a wardrobe holy grail. Of course, the perfect version of this staple means different things to different people. For some, it could be an oversized biker jacket made of brown pebbled leather. For others, a leather blazer, slightly elongated and double-breasted for extra sleekness.

Except if you're shopping this spring, there does seem to be a consensus about which leather jacket would make the best addition to your wardrobe, and that's a leather blouson. Collared and single-breasted with a boxy fit that works equally well with slinky dresses or crisp tees, a blouson is a one-way-ticket to looking put together but not too polished. And if you want to know where to buy yours, the answer is Whistles.

Not only has the high street retailer cornered the market when it comes to sell-out leather jackets, with a bonded style that has sold out not once, not twice, but five times, but it keeps bringing out bangers. Its latest? The Kate burnished leather jacket, which really is one of the best versions of the blouson we've seen this season.

Need evidence that it's 'the one'? Alexa Chung recently posted what might be the perfect springtime selfie, featuring a cherry blossom tree, a cardigan that revealed a whisper of bare skin and a leather blouson that was most likely vintage. Fear not, however. Whistles's Kate has similar vital stats, with a hem that hits the upper thigh, a single-breasted closure that lends itself to a nicely boxy silhouette and a neat collar that means it can skew a little sporty if needed.

If you want a more exuberant shade - well, it is supposed to spring - Whistles has yet another leather jacket, the Frida, in a delicious shade of bottle green.

Fashion editors take liberties with the advice 'you throw it over anything' but, in this case, it really is true (Grazia's Julia Harvey styled the blouson with balloon-leg jeans, a brown overshirt and leather ballet pumps). Whether you're wearing a puff-sleeved dress that needs a little bite or lo-fi baggy jeans and sneakers, this jacket will be your best friend this spring, summer and beyond.

Natalie Hammond is Grazia’s senior fashion news editor. She loves winter, hates summer and can often be found writing about the weather (and what on earth to wear).
