I’d Given Up On Denim Shorts – But This Uniqlo Pair Has Me Completely Rethinking My Summer Wardrobe

Every year I tell myself I can't do another summer stuck in the confines of denim shorts. You're most likely familiar with the type - too short to sit comfortably in, too rigid so your thighs constantly chafe - and, by mid-July, I'm back wishing for wool coat weather so I can get out of denim shorts and back into something, well, anything else. And so, every year, in an attempt to escape another denim short summer, I flock to all the possible alternatives, such as linen trousers, tailored shorts and floaty skirts. That was, however, until I found the one pair that made me rethink everything I thought I knew about denim shorts

It probably comes as no surprise that the shorts are from the brand behind excellent elevated basics - Uniqlo. Its Denim Bermuda Shorts, £24.90 have nailed the brief when it comes to the perfect jorts. Thanks to Hailey Bieber sporting a pair of Bermuda shorts in a gloriously perfect light blue denim wash back in 2023, Bermuda shorts have made a departure from teenager-round-the-skate-park to a fashion editor favourite that cool girls across all capitals can't stop wearing. Uniqlo's iteration are cut to knee-length, and feature metal tack buttons and five pockets. The denim is also soft and supple, meaning it flatters without clinging to your thighs.

Uniqlo's Bermuda shorts are also available in an array of different washes from classic blue to beige to grey. But, the best part about the shorts has to be their styling potential. Wear the blue pair with a button-down linen shirt and Zara's viral toe-ring sandals, or style the grey with a tucked-in tank top and raffia bag. For an outfit that's more polished, add a linen blazer and gold jewellery, and voilà, the city short has been reimagined.

Daisy dukes have had their moment (and several comebacks since), and it's clear that this summer it's about embracing a longer length - I can admit that short shorts are fun, but only until you have to sit down or walk further than 200 metres. The Bermuda style, on the other hand is the real reason I've left my denim-short-hating era and am fully embracing not being a hostage to my hemline.
