There were all kind of outlandish accessories at Milan Fashion Week. Cowboy hats. Thigh-high boots. Elbow-length gloves. But something that stood out the most as being a bit of fashion no-no was one particular pairing: socks with heels. Socks and sandals, yes. But socks and heels? In our experience, it's a hit-and-miss combo that often sends mixed messages.
But lo and behold, Milan has proved us wrong - or rather the street style stars, who boldly tried what others have failed at before. Giorgia Tordini, one half of the insanely glamorous duo behind The Attico, wore socks (thick) and sandals (spindly) with her micro skirt (Prada).
Emili Sindlev wore a pair of white tennis socks with her gold Miu Mius; Tamu McPherson paired some thick woollen socks with crystal-studded caged sandals. The weather was surprisingly balmy for February - so the socks weren't a temperate-related choice - but rather a style statement (or a convenient way to cover up a chipped pedicure).
And as you can see from the variety of heels - caged, slingbacks, gladiators - there's no right answer when it comes to socks and heels (although the socks, from what we can gather, often work best if they sit on the neutral spectrum to let the shoe do the talking). If you've been biding your time for 'heels' weather, the wait is over.
