Just when you thought nothing could lift the gloom off lockdown 3.0, Sarah Jessica Parker swoops in to save the day, announcing, along with her co-stars Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, that HBO's Sex and the Cityis finally getting a reboot. The limited series of 10 episodes is called And Just Like That, and filming is slated for spring. While it simply can't come soon enough, in the meantime we've realised we can distract ourselves with another iconic wardrobe from the '90s. Not Carrie's, but SJP's.
Parker is certainly no slouch when it comes to style. Before Sex And The City, and Carrie's obsessive compulsive shoe disorder, the actor was busy carving out a film career, with hits like Ed Wood (1984) and The First Wives Club (1996) - and swiftly making a name as a style star in her own right.
Just as Carrie’s wardrobe contained all the decade’s hallmarks - the slip dress, the mule, the dinky shoulder bag etc - so too did SJP’s, which is why her '90s wardrobe is the latest subject in our FashBack series.
She's now known for having one of the most fabulous wardrobes in Manhattan - and shares the prize for the Met Gala's most meme-worthy outfits with Rihanna - but SJP's '90s style was altogether more effortless. She flipped between minimalism (a major '90s moment) and an off-beat, cool-girl kind of glamour, pulling off flared jumpsuits, printed silk dresses and beaded slips with throw-on-and-go ease.
Let's look at some of the her greatest hit. For 1992’s Honeymoon In Vegas premiere, SJP wore a simple flaring slip accessorised with gold pendant necklaces in a look that was much more casual, yet no less glam, than today’s overly-slick red carpet.
1993’s MTV Movie Awards was another effortless appearance, with SJP dressed in a scoop-neck (and glove-tight) jumpsuit that was sparkling bright white. The flared legs, paired with her loose and tightly-curled locks, created a fashion moment on par with the ‘naked’ dress that Carrie wears on her first date with Mr Big.
For her next, at the special handprints ceremony for the cast of Ed Wood outside Hollywood’s Vista Theatre in 1994, SJP wore a black tank dress. Proving that she was always the queen of the unexpected style twist (sleeves are worn deliberately too-long, necklaces are oversized or clashing) she took the LBD from classic to cool by teaming with stompy, black lace-up boots that stopped almost halfway up her calf. It was a nod to polished grunge, made famous by Winona Ryder’s red carpet style throughout the decade, and put the actor’s pared-back personal style in the spotlight.
In the late '90s, just as SATC was preparing for lift off, Parker had a bombshell moment. For 1999’s Emmy’s, she rocked up a spangled, lemon sorbet-coloured slip dress, with a head full of flyaway blonde curls, which could have come straight out of you-know-who’s walk-in closet. She also borrowed another Carrie favourite throughout the decade - the boob tube top/dress - to brilliant effect. At Talk Magazine’s 1999 launch party, SJP opted for a white bandeau dress with several strings of bright beaded necklaces in a look that was straight up series two.
For those looking to get the '90s SJP look, distill it down to the decade’s key ingredients. A shoulder bag (the gold standard = a Fendi Baguette), some combat trousers (Jen An used to be a fan, and Carrie wore them several seasons), a body-hugging slip dress and a nostalgic name necklace. Manolos, of course, are always a good idea.
