At Richard Malone, show-goers were treated to the holy trinity when it comes to the catwalk: an awe-inspiring setting (the V&A Museum), a thought-provoking collection that both moves and makes you look twice, and, the big one, accessories that are alluring enough to make you want to beg, borrow and steal your way backstage.
The bags in question were the debut of Mulberry x Richard Malone, part of an ongoing series to celebrate the heritage handbag label's 50th anniversary. Malone follows in the footsteps of Priya Ahluwalia, then Nicholas Daley, and chose to reinterpret two of the most popular bags in the stable: the Bayswater, once a favourite of Kate Moss, Meghan Markle and Blake Lively, and the newer Darley, a small satchel that is a very common sighting on the front row of London Fashion Week.
Both bags feature the brand's iconic postman's lock, which is encased in leather for a modern update, and are available in the post-modern shades of of firetruck red, peacock blue and forest green. For the Bayswater, the designer transported interior design details - like the pockets, piping and serial numbered fobs - to the exterior, amping the bag's functional credentials.
Malone, who hails from Wexford, Ireland, has always been an advocate of sustainability, which chimes with Mulberry's 'Made in England' ethos. For the partnership, Mulberry used an eco-friendly version of its signature Scotchgrain, crafted from bio-synthetic materials. Any leather used, meanwhile, is from environmentally-accredited tanneries. Spotted on celebrity attendees such as Chinenye Ezeudu, Clara Amfo and Amelia Windsor, these bags already have 'It' - and investment - status.
