When news first broke of Kate Moss's collaboration with Zara, our collective reaction was nothing short of giddy. For those who remember the supermodel's partnership with Topshop (much of which can still be found on eBay), this feels like the perfect high street sequel. Based on some of her favourite pieces from her own (extremely influential) wardrobe, Moss's Zara collection launches today and, while we're not exactly seeing the same scenes from 2007 – Oxford Street came to a standstill – it's fair to expect this offering to sell out with rapid speed.
In an interview with Grazia, Moss told us that the collection is 'sexy, fun, rock’n’roll. It’s a day-to-night collection – we wanted something that could translate to both. The pieces are perfect for a party, but they had to be versatile, too. Take the jacket off and you’re in a halterneck, that kind of idea.’ Indeed, these are clothes with a whisper of Moss's greatest hits; the halterneck in question is a '70s-inspired style which, in the collection's campaign, is styled with lace-up velvet flares with distinct glam-rock vibes.
There are, naturally, leopard print jackets, a mini dress that looks remarkably like the famous lurex style she wore to Glastonbury in 2005, ruffled maxis, embellished bralettes and vintage-inspired T-bar heels. 'Ultimately, the collection had to be about things that we wanted,’ Moss said of the design process. ‘There are pieces I’ve had in my wardrobe that I have worn over and over again. I know that they’re the pieces I’ll pack when I go away. Certain dresses here feel exactly like that, like they’ll become new staples, like the long cream dress. It’s so easy and so glamorous and you could wear it on a beach or in a nightclub with a heel.’
Launching in the midst of party season, Moss herself acknowledges that she has designed pieces for those moments when you want to feel your most glamorous but that they work for multiple occasions, too: 'There are a couple of pieces here that are real 'Christmas party, going for dinner and lending you a bit of sparkle. The brocade jacket worn over a dress – that definitely says Christmas. But you could also wear it to a gig with jeans.’
Any style advice Moss wants to impart, we're more than happy to accept. On that basis alone, it seems worth shopping this collection, safe in the knowledge that you're taking your style cues from one of the world's most stylish women.
