Over the past few months, a new fashion formula, unexpectedly lo-fi in personality, has been sweeping Instagram. Kendall Jenner kicked things off when she was spotted wearing high-waisted chinos and a billowing white button-down, all from The Row, in New York. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley soon joined the club, followed closely by Elsa Hosk, both of whom, like Jenner, styled their open shirts with crisp white tees underneath. What these three components did was speak to this summer's need for both polish and practicality, but now they're everywhere, what next?
According to Gigi Hadid, it's time to sidestep sand-coloured chinos for the even more forgiving brown and baggy trousers. Add a blazer – Hadid's is the double-breasted style from Wardrobe NYC – and you're ticking the same two boxes (and leaving room to get creative when it comes to what you wear underneath).
Kaia Gerber is another fan of the 'blazer and brown trousers' look. Spotted out yesterday, the model wore a chocolate pair of flared pants with the preppy-cool combination of a navy blue blazer with penny loafers and a neckerchief. Very off-duty Blair Waldorf, no?
To get the proportions just so, you're looking for a pair of brown trousers that isn't too tailored and looks quite loose overall. The Frankie Shop has an array of biscuity options, but the full-length suit pants in Java, which have a slight kick flare and are a rich shade of coffee bean, is my favourite. If you want the overall look to be slightly more streetwear (like Hadid's), Stüssy's recycled nylon utility pants look very similar to her khakis from Brain Dead. Now all you need is no-fuss hair - try a slicked back ballerina bun - and some chunky chain-link jewellery. Getting dressed never seemed so easy, right?
