The dreaded winter season is seemingly dragging on this year, and finding the best faux fur coat is still topping our priority list. Timeless, snug and oh-so-fashionable, there's a reason these fur jackets have been unfailing for years and, more importantly, why they're back and better than ever as one of the best coats to invest in.
Championed by the A-list and the street-style set alike, this winter staple can make even the most basic outfit look refined and as the saying goes: the bigger the better. Kendall Jenner recently stepped out in an opulent white fur coat by Phoebe Philo, worn with a pared back black mini skirt and sheer tights and accessorised with minimalist gold earrings — the ultimate cool-girl evening out look.

But, although you may be simply thinking of neutral and mink-toned faux fur jackets, the truth is that gone are the days when our faux fur was simply black or brown. In 2025, it's anything goes, with bright block shades of red, pink, blue and even not-so-subtle leopard print gaining popularity.

Afraid of committing to the glam look? Worried about looking a little Cruella De Vil? Well, neutrals are still in style and a classic black or brown coat will work wonders with a simple T-shirt and slouchy jeans. Or if you're dressing for an evening out, a faux fur jacket is the perfect pairing for your LBD or a silky slip skirt to dial up the glamour.
Don't believe us? Turn your attention to the streets at recently concluded New York and Copenhagen fashion week, where stylish attendees topped their outfits with lush fur coats. Many of our favourite influencers have also been taking opulent furs for a spin.
A particular favourite that's seemingly inescapable on Instagram feeds lately is Abercrombie & Fitch's Shawl Collar Faux Fur Coat. Available in black, white, and an almost sold-out brown, the coat is cut for a slightly oversized fit with a cosy shawl collar and its currently on sale. The Sopranos-worthy coat is also surprisingly versatile, with influencers pairing it with everything from ski suits and low-rise jeans to even evening dresses.

While black coats are usually the popular choice, their chocolate brown cousins are just as versatile and sometimes, way more chic. Reformation's short Ellie coat is closer to a blazer than a full-sized coat, meaning it'll work well with the more elegant classic in your wardrobe.

What Are Faux Fur Coats Made From?
When animal rights activists started to create awareness over the moral wrongdoings of wearing real animal fur, we saw a shift in the fashion industry to a synthetic version of the sought-after animal coats, including leather and shearling coats. Faux fur came in as a more ethical option - plus, it was a whole lot more affordable than the real thing. Now, you can invest in faux fur coats that are both stylish and chic as much as they are high-quality and good for the planet. You don't have to go too far to find a faux fur option either, with brands from high-street to high-end stocking faux fur jackets that look as good as real fur.
What are they made from, though? Well, when faux fur started getting bigger, brands embraced synthetic materials designed to mimic the appearance and texture of real animal fur. You'll find these made out of fibres like acrylic, polyester and modacrylic which are all made with a variety of characteristics which replicates that of real fur.
You can still find real animal skin in products like leather coats or shearling jackets, so it's really a personal choice on whether or not you'd rather go real or fake. There's enough out there on the market to make the choice for yourself, so make sure to do your research so you know what you're really investing in.
