If you’ve spent the week wondering what on earth to wear, consider this your cue: a breezy midi might be the answer. We've already seen the revival of polka dot skirts and lace skirts - now, the A-line midi skirt is having its moment, making a departure from the micro and mini hemlines that dominated the post-lockdown era with its low-rise waist and Y2K, well, everything. We're witnessing a sartorial shift to pieces that lean further towards modest fashion, which is somewhat unsurprising considering the recent popularity of the 'trad wife' and 'cottagecore' microtrends. If this sounds like I'm just spouting Gen Z jargon, all you really need to know is that hemlines are getting longer, corporate-wear has become weekend-wear (even Kate Middleton is in her Corpcore era), and A-line midi skirts are at the heart of this shift.

The A-line midi skirt has already had the celebrity sign of approval. Alexa Chung was spotted in the skirt with her usual brand of cool nonchalance - pairing it with a navy knit and Uggs. Laura Harrier also shared an image of herself wearing the skirt the LA-way, with a strapless top, cord necklace and The Row's Ginza sandals. It's not just celebrities embracing the trend either, designers are also backing the longer hemline, with iterations seen at both Jacquemus' and Miu Miu's spring/summer 2025 runways, the former opting for a floor-sweeping maxi while the latter chose a knee-length skirt and preppy polo pairing.

Nobody's Child, White A-Line Midi SkirtNobody's Child

This white Nobody's Child midi skirt is already low in stock - and it's probably down to its flattering fit that isn't restricting nor body-skimming, elasticated waist and handy pockets. Style with sandals for the day or small kitten heels for the evening.

As you can probably imagine, the high street is already saturated with takes on the trend too, but it's the A-line Midi Skirt from Nobody's Child that's a cult favourite in the making. With its on-trend A-line shape, swishy skirt and pockets (!), this is the kind of piece you don't realise your wardrobe was missing until it's on heavy rotation; styled with a tank top and Havaiana flip flops, a waistcoat and fisherman sandals, or with a linen shirt and ballet flats.

While white might be your go-to during these warmer months, Nobody's Child has also released its A-line midi in black - which feels somewhat like a chic older sister. Sleek, versatile, and slightly more low-maintenance, the black option is a moodier take on the trend (and also is less likely to show any grass or wine stains).

Nobody's Child, Black Linen-Blend A-Line Midi SkirtNobody's Child

It's not just the white midi skirt that's on-trend either - the black is also a good alternative. This Nobody's Child style is popular for its relaxed skirt that skims the body, side pockets and option to buy it in a petite length.

Saying that, there's always going to be something about a white skirt in summer that just works - it's easy and has the ability to make a basic tank top look considered. Whether you're heading to the office, a rooftop bar, or attempting to survive the tube (and inevitable heat) with a semblance of style, the white A-line midi skirt is the piece to invest in this summer. Of course, black may be a year-round fail-safe, but in spring/summer, white definitely has the upper hand. Shop a selection of the best white skirts below.

Aligne, Natalie Elasticated Cotton Midi SkirtAligne

Aligne's cotton midi skirt has also been a hit with influencers, styling it with everything from a plain white t-shirt to a longline waistcoat. The skirt did come also in a butter yellow, but with that sold out, it's likely the white iteration won't be far off either.

Mango, Flared Cotton SkirtMango

Mango's skirt is not only available in white, but red and black too. Made from a cotton fabric that will keep you cool, the design also features a comfortable elastic waistband and A-line design. Style with a button-down striped shirt and a pair of fisherman sandals.

River Island, White A Line Poplin Midi SkirtRiver Island

River Island's white skirt is made from a poplin fabric that means the skirt drapes to the ankle and almost flares out at the waist. Finished with an elasticated waist and boxy pleats that give it a preppy feel, lean into it by pairing with a polo shirt, white ankle socks and chunky loafers.

Reformation, Lucy SkirtReformation

The Lucy skirt from Reformation may be most popular in white, but it also comes in black and grey, too. Designed to be more fitted at the waist and cascade into a floaty skirt, it features a back zipper and flattering pleats. Style with ballet flats and a graphic baby tee.

Free People, Lowen Midi Skirt Free People

Free People also has a midi skirt with similar pleated design and length. Where the design differs, however, is in the sheer range of colours available (it's perhaps the biggest selection of colours I've seen) - you can get it in any shade from bright red to navy or lilac.

Boden, Double Cloth Smocked SkirtBoden

Boden's smocked skirt is a lighter alternative to some of the other skirts on this list, but still has the signature details like an elasticated waist and floaty A-line skirt. Designed to fall mid-calf, the skirt is perfect for styling with statement shoes - like socks and fisherman sandals or animal printed loafers.

Róhe, Embroidered Cotton Poplin Maxi SkirtMyTheresa

Róhe is a bit of an under-the-radar brand that's a very well-kept fashion editor secret for pieces that are likely to stay in your wardrobe for years and years. Its skirts are no different, and this style proves that, with its sweet ladder embroidery along the trim and full circle design.
