You don’t need to consult your weather app of choice to know it’s officially jacket season. But which cover-up will put you ahead of the curve this autumn? Ironically, it’s one that will necessitate even more of a dependence on the forecast: a suede jacket.
Versions have been all over Instagram and now they’ve filtered down to the high street in a big way, arriving in a wealth of fall-appropriate shades. Too soon? It won’t be once you’ve clapped eyes on the fringed number from Whistles, which has sold out in black but, thankfully, is still available in mustard.
If you’re doubtful as to how practical it is to add a suede jacket to your wardrobe, take note of the street style set at Copenhagen Fashion Week. Pernille Teisbaek wore a suede jacket by Miu Miu, an oversized bomber style that was stolen from her partner’s side of the wardrobe. Styling her jacket with the brand’s coordinating trainers, she proved beyond reasonable doubt that suede is the fabric to seen in this season. And whether you wear it for work (paired with sharp black slacks) or for play (over a lace-trimmed slip dress), it’s a winner. (Influencer Lizzy Hadfield wore the sell-out suede jacket from Soeur, which is due to be restocked soon, and her comments section blew up: ‘Where is it suede jacket season already!? I need to book my flight haha!’)
That being said, living in the UK, it’s crucial to look after your suede jacket so that it can look after you. That means treating its surface with a preventive spray before wearing it in the wild - and steering clear of rain wherever possible. Happy autumn!
