Predictions for spring 2025 biggest trends have already been swirling - will it be the the trench coat, butter yellow, florals, or all three? While those will be somewhere in the mix, there's one style of coat that's making its mark: the quilted jacket. With its lightweight warmth and textural intrigue, the quilted jacket is proving to be the ultimate transitional staple - offering just the right amount of coverage for those unpredictable spring days, as well as just enough warmth for days when the weather can't make up its mind.

If the streets of the latest London Fashion Week are anything to go by, quilted jackets were seen draped over everything from tailoring to relaxed denim. The best part about a quilted jacket has to be its versatility - with the ability to add structure to floaty midi dresses, or an extra layer over jeans and a tee. It's the kind of piece that you'll find will quickly become your wardrobe linchpin.

Two cult-favourite quilted jackets solidified its status as a permanent wardrobe fixture. The first being The Frankie Shop's Quilted Padded Ripstock Jacket, an oversized, utilitarian khaki dream that's been an Instagram mainstay since its 2021 debut (and has also sold out more times than I can count on one hand). Then there's Ganni's Ripstop Quilted Jacket, an elevated take on the trend, complete with exaggerated collar (were we expecting anything else?) This injects a playful and obviously-Ganni touch into an otherwise pragmatic outerwear staple.

Ganni's iteration of the quilted jacket include features that make it, well, inherently Ganni. The patch pockets and oversized shape give it a relaxed look, meanwhile the widespread Peter Pan collar is finished with quirky ruffles. Plus, the jacket is cut from quilted recycled-shell, giving it that waxy sheen.

The quilted jacket trend has trickled down further into the high street too, with Uniqlo's PUFFERTECH Relaxed Jacket, £49.90, as one of the best styles (and most affordable) styles. The jacker delivers all the practicality of its designer counterparts - like the water-repellent finish and antistatic yarns, without the three-digit price tag.

The PUFFERTECH items from Uniqlo offer the best of both worlds: warmth and lightweight comfort. Inside this quilted jacket is an alternative that's similar to that of feathers, but is quick-drying and ultrafine. That makes it the perfect layering piece to have in your wardrobe, whether you're choosing to wear it underneath a long wool coat, or just on its own.

All you need now are your heavy-duty boots and you're ready to face the elements. We would suggest, though, opting for the best raincoat instead if you're looking to shy away from those April showers. Here are the best quilted coats you need if you're looking to make the trend your own.

Zara, Water-Repellent Quilted JacketZara

Zara have a quilted jacket offering too, this time finished with a round neck, front patch pockets and button fastenings down the front. Available in two colours, khaki and black, style the first with a sweatshirt and straight-leg jeans, and the latter over the top of a tee and satin midi skirt.

Ganni, Black Ripstop Quilt JacketGanni

Ganni's Quilt Jacket is a chic cold-weather essential. Its sleek quilted design, relaxed fit, and contemporary style make it a versatile and fashionable addition to your spring/summer wardrobe.

M&S also weigh into the world of quilted jackets with its slightly more relaxed style that features a corduroy collar and ribbed cuffs. Made with a shower-resistant Stormwear finish, this jacket will keep you shielded from any April showers, and will also keep you warm on those slightly cooler days, thanks to its Thermowarmth insulation.

Free People, Chloe JacketFree People

Free People's quilted jackets have been a hit with influencers and fashion editor's for a while now, with the brand releasing more and more colours and prints. The coat is cut in a slouchy silhouette and features cream piping, dropped shoulders and a high-collar neckline.

Next has a sage green quilted coat with a corduroy collar and trim to the two pockets, and a flattering drawcord waist so you can really cinch it in. The great thing about this style is that it's slightly thicker than others on the list, so it can be worn as the weather gets better as we get further into spring.

Barbour, Amy Quilted Car CoatBarbour

Barbour's new Quilted Car Coat is one of the most iconic quilted coats on the market - purely down to the fact it was designed by Alexa Chung in her role as creative director for the edit. This coat is so good it almost could be vintage, with its oversized collar, onion quilting and whimsical bow tie at the neckline.

Damson Madder, Macy Jacket Damson Madder

If you're on the hunt for a quilted jacket that's slightly more avant-garde than some of the more laidback styles on our list - the place to go is Damson Madder. The brand know for its unique pieces, the Macy Jacket is no different. With a bright red and reversable design, the quilted coat also boasts a buttoned front and organic cotton material.

It's easy to shy away from winter whites as the weather is still overcast and April showers loom. But, this ME+EM quilted coat proves exactly why winter whites shouldn't be something to worry about. With its functional pockets, boxy fit and slightly cropped length, wear the coat underneath a longer trench, and with jeans.

Are quilted coats actually good for winter?

A quilted coat is a great choice for almost every season as it can be layered with cosy knits for autumn and winter and worn on its own with a light t-shirt in the spring. They're versatile and offer protection no matter what weather condition is thrown your way.

You may find that some quilted coats are thicker than others, and they may be more suitable for colder months as they offer a lot of insulation. There are also thinner quilted coats and jackets available to buy, which you may find more appropriate for spring.

Are quilted coats waterproof?

When it comes to wearing quilted clothing, one of your first thoughts is likely to be: 'will I be protected from the rain?'. Fear not though, where there's a will, there's a quilted coat. Though probably not your best bet for torrential rain, you can wear one in light rain as it will offer some protection from wet weather conditions.
