Alongside the usual red carpet accessories of embellished clutch bags, sky-high platforms and a smorgasbord of diamonds and jewels, one accessory in particular was having a moment at last night's BAFTAs. From long black velvet to turquoise tulle, gloves, in particular elbow-length opera gloves, were the finishing touch to many an outfit.
Milly Bobbie Brown added matching velvet opera gloves to her gown from Louis Vuitton, complete with a giant diamond cocktail ring fitting snuggly over the top. What a way to add some sparkle to an ensemble, eh?
Sienna Miller, in Gucci SS22, opted for a black lace pair to compliment her blush silk gown. While Bimini Bon-Boulash gave us a lesson in serious glamour, accessorising their ivory dress - a ruched and gathered number from Yuhan Wang - with a delicate pair in bright turquoise tulle.
In all cases, the gloves dialled things up a notch. A gown is all well and good but when everyone and their mother is wearing one, it pays to have something a little extra, especially when the temperatures are not on our side (and wearing a winter coat isn't really an option).
Just to be clear, we're not talking about mittens the shape of oven gloves (sorry, but that's too practical for a red carpet). What you're looking for is either leather gloves with extra length so that they can be scrunched up your arms like washing up gloves (but chic) or sheer gloves that won't do much to elevate your temperature, but will do a lot to elevate your look. For a full-on fashion moment look to independent designer T Label, who does tulle gloves in all the colours and styles we could ever wish for. While for something more 'everyday', COS's long black leather gloves give just the right amount of scrunch.
