There are two pieces in your wardrobe that sum up spring in Britain 2021. The first, a puffer jacket – because Britain + 2021 = make everything al fresco. The second, anything floral – because, obviously, spring. We know, we know; cue that jibe from The Devil Wears Prada. Groan. Eye roll. Etc. But floral prints are a perennial spring favourite for a reason. They epitomise the season: New beginnings! Verdant possibility! Antihistamine! Besides, we were trapped inside for most of last spring, so why not revel in this one?
If you were in any doubt about the eternal charm of floral prints, then look to Sienna Miller. At a screening for Gucci’s 100th-anniversary Aria collection this week she wore a red floral dress from the house’s Ouverture collection that looked as of-the-moment now as it did when the caped, plissé chiffon style appeared on the runway at Alessandro Michele’s debut Gucci show back in 2015 (Gucci is cannily rebooting iconic designs from the archives right now; Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 red velvet tuxedo was reworked in the Aria collection). The takeaway: Some things never go out of style. And as Miller shows, the floral dress will always be the ultimate spring dress.
So you’re on board, but how should you wear florals now? Go wild! Whether you want to take a trip to an English country garden or Hawaiian hothouse, there’s a floral to suit you this season. Perhaps you’re in the mood for a scattering of delicate poesies, like those found at Erdem, Emilia Wickstead and Chloé; or maybe you want to tap into the power of some boom blooms, as seen Valentino, Prada and Christian Wijnants.
Classic dressers will always win in a petal-strewn tea dress, while those who are feeling bold will take a devil-may-care attitude and clash different prints together (see Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi). If you’re still feeling cottagecore then dial up the romance with ribbons and baskets and anything else you might imagine the Bennet sisters wearing - see Kendall Jenner in Rodartefor a masterclass. That’s the spirit you should be going for this wedding season. But if you’re feeling rebellious and typically find pretty florals too tame for you, then rebellious accessories – think stompy boots, slouchy denim, grungy knits – will add a dose of subversion to the sweetness.
And, of course, however you choose to take your florals – at least until May 17 it is still perfectly acceptable to add a puffer.
