For those who have been waiting in breathless anticipation for a photograph ofGigi Hadid and Zayn Malik's newborn daughter, Hadid took to Instagram to give the people what they want this past weekend. And while it was a sweet photograph of the supermodel with her daughter snuggled up to her, we couldn't help but notice that Hadid is the latest celebrity to showcase the ultimate inluxe loungewear: a coatigan.
Halfway between a cardigan and a coat, it borrows hero elements from both - the former’s snuggle-factor and the latter’s heavy-duty appeal - to deliver an article of clothing that is warm enough for outdoors and sumptuous enough to curl up on the sofa in. J.Lo is also a fan.
Lopez’s styled hers, a cashmere-mohair-and-silk number from Brunello Cucinelli, with a smart-casual combo of wide-leg black trousers and stomper boots. And then came Jennifer Lawrence in New York, throwing a belted coatigan (Dior, sigh) over a pair of silky polka dot trousers to run errands.
The Jennifers share more than just initials. As evidenced by their coatigans, both clearly know how to make knitwear look smart as opposed to slubby. Dress yours up with a few choice accessories - Celine by Hedi Slimane’s calfskin top-handle in the case of J.Law - and it definitely won’t look like something you wear when your central heating is on the blink. Trust us.
Now it’s just about finding coatigans that don’t cost as much as a new boiler. H&M has a long belted cardigan that has oversized sleeves and hits just below the knee. Cinch it over a heat-tech polo neck, add a cashmere scarf, and you’ve got a great outfit for all those park meet-ups you’ve scheduled. Slightly more expensive is the wool-cashmere wrap jacket from Charlotte Lewis’s Ven Store; there’s really nothing chicer for video calls. Finally, if you’re fond of the jazzier things in life, Hayley Menzies is the only option. Her fringed merino wool coatigans are the definition of joyful dressing.
