I have very mixed feelings about the (almost) return of coat season. On one hand, it covers the outfit I've spent hours picking, but on the other, a great coat is an outfit in itself, making it an easy fix for styling dilemmas. For me to get truly excited about a coat, it needs to elevate any look, but it shouldn't completely overpower my well-thought-out outfit either. However, nothing convinces me to buy something more than when one (or four) of my friends wholeheartedly recommend something they already own and swear by every year – I believe the words usually used are 'it'll be right up your street.' So when I realised that the coat in question not only ticks all my boxes, but it's just been restocked for 2025, I knew it needed to wind up in my own wardrobe (and yours) pronto.

Aligne's George Wrap Coat needs little to no introduction. A mainstay in its autumn/winter collections for many years now, you've likely seen this coat on Instagram more than once, and there's a good reason for that. The wrap coat features oversized lapels that will complement a classic checked scarf beautifully, as well as a detachable belt around the middle to cinch you in if you so wish. The wool-blend composition is also another excellent detail to keep you warm as the temperatures begin to dip, and you can really snuggle into it because the fit is purposely oversized. I know the feeling of trying to track down the perfect winter coat, and this Aligne design, I'm pretty sure, nails it in one.

George Wrap Coat in NavyALIGNE

The George Wrap Coat has been released in its classic colours, starting with this laidback navy hue. A good coat to throw on for your commute to the office, the Aligne best-seller is finished with an oversized lapel and two side pockets.

Aligne has become the insider label to know, lauded for its excellent outerwear and denim that hits the sweet spot of modern designs with a timeless edge (it was only a mere few months ago I was waxing lyrical about a particular denim jacket from the brand). Nowhere is this more evident than in the George Wrap Coat, which is purposely simple and available in only four staple colours. Take the grey and navy iterations, for example, which lean into being styled with tonal knits, crisp shirting or mid-wash denim jeans. The other two shades, black and white, deliver impact through duality – with the black offering a city-ready finish, and the white making for the ultimate statement against winter's typical darker tones.

George Wrap Coat in GreyALIGNE

There's no doubt that the most popular colour of the George Wrap Coat is this grey shade. With the same oversized lapels and generally boxy fit, style the grey iteration with a cosy knit tucked into a pair of straight-leg jeans, and finish the look with pointed boots.

Saying that, what really makes the George Wrap Coat so great isn't its oversized design or its considered colourways, but the way it will slip so easily (perhaps too easily) into your autumn/winter wardrobe. Aligne's cult coat can elevate an outfit without necessarily overwhelming it – and that, I can get on board with. Whatever you choose to wear underneath, tailoring, denim, knits, or satin, it all works, which probably explains why four of my friends already have it in their rotation. And, if we all show up in the same coat next time we see each other, well, that just says more about the coat than it does about us.

No winter wardrobe is complete without a simple black wool coat, and Aligne's George style fits the bill. Dress down with a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, or dress up layered over the top of a satin slip dress.

Coming soon

The first of the four George coats to sell out is the white iteration. Currently labelled by Aligne as 'coming soon', it's a good idea to sign up to be notified when this option comes back in stock.

Barnaby Reversible Trench Coat ALIGNE

If you're on the hunt for a trench coat to bridge the gap between autumn and winter, Aligne's outerwear offering is also stacked with lighter and wearable styles. Its Barnaby Reversible Trench Coat is a real highlight, with a navy and cream reversible print, detachable belt and concealed placket.

Bark Denim Flock JacketALIGNE

Suede is adorning absolutely everything right now - and that means coats and jackets must be suede, too. Aligne's suede offering has a boxy fit, shirt collar, buttoned fastening and contrasting corduroy collar.

Moto Collarless Leather JacketALIGNE

It's only right to include one of Aligne's cult leather jackets too. This one is from the brand's new-in section, and features subtly curved long sleeves, silver buttons down the front and a crew neckline. Plus, it's made from a buttery-soft bonded leather that will keep its shape, even after lots of wear.
