Last summer, TikTok backed the coastal grandmother aesthetic. This summer, the platform has tapped its younger, slightly spunkier cousin (or perhaps that should be granddaughter): the coastal cowgirl. Borrowing from the original, but spicing things up ever-so-slightly, it's crucial to get on board now that the countdown to summer is 77 days.
As TikTok user @rachspeed says, 'I am neither a cowgirl nor from the coast but somehow this became my vibe.' Her along with thousands of others on TikTok, where people are giving away all kinds of free styling advice about the aesthetic's hallmarks: cowboy boots, obviously, denim and shell jewellery.
In case you need a recap, coastal grandmother was all about embracing a laidback but very luxe beach house mood, where crisp white sheets and a well-stocked wine fridge would be the background to shots of women wearing cream cable-knit jumpers and starring off into the distance. Coastal cowgirl is basically coastal grandmother with a cowboy hat or pair of boots.
The foundation of her ideal outfit is anything you could wear to walk along a beach: a cashmere jumper with a baggy pair of jeans, perhaps, or a cheesecloth dress with fisherman's sandals. The fun is in the accessories - a felt cowboy hat (surprisingly easy to style with your existing wardrobe if you opt for a neutral shade like taupe), some shell earrings (because, you know, you're supposed to be by the seaside) and some bedazzled cowboy boots like Free People's. Yee-haw!
