You’ve been treating yourself to a back-garden Pimm’s (on more weeknights than one) - and have bought a hand-held fan. Such happenings can only mean one thing. Wimbledon. Is. Here.

Yes, the matches might be the main event, but outfit-spotting in the green stands has become a great spectator sport. And while there isn’t a strict dress code unless you’re taking a seat in the royal box, it’s a brilliant chance to dress up. You don’t have to go full frock-and-fascinator - this isn’t Royal Ascot - but do be warned that the cameras tend to pan around centre court when the players are towelling themselves down so it's an opportunity to impress.

Luckily, there’s plenty of celebrity inspiration to draw on. Keep reading for the six lessons to learn before you step foot in SW19.

1. Go bright

The best way to stand out from the crowd is with a bolt-from-the-blue shade of, er, banana. The Duchess of Cambridge’s sunshine-coloured sheath dress ticked all the right boxes back in 2018.

Actor Ella Balinska also made a case for sunshine brights at a past tournament, pairing buttercup tailoring with an orange button-down and, naturally, white tennis sneakers.

2. Don't forget a cover-up

This is London. So be warned that the weather can turn at any moment. Alexa Chung’s short-sleeved summer knit is the perfect solution. Button over a wafty summer dress, tuck a discreet brolly in your bag and you’re good to go.

DÔEN has a lovely range of lightweight cover-ups that can be flung over strappy dresses and tank tops when the sun goes down.

A navy blue blazer - a perfect match for the referee's uniform - is also a safe bet, especially when paired with polka dots.

Whistles' blazer, sleek and single-breasted, would sharpen up a white tee and wide-leg trousers in no time.

Adwoa Aboah at Wimbledon

Adwoa Aboah wore her version of tennis whites - jeans and a cropped cardi - with a double-breasted coat the colour of clotted cream in 2019.

A cropped trench coat is the ideal jacket for hot summer days that turn into cool summer nights.

3. Keep it simple

Keira Knightley's T-shirt dress, at the tournament in 2014, was a masterclass in how to do stealth chic in the stands.

This is one of our favourite looks from Meghan. Period. The striped shirt, the wide-leg trousers, the straw hat - it’s head-turningly good.

5. Don't forget tailoring

If the weather allows it, a tailored two-piece looks especially smart (and was always a favourite with Princess Diana). Billie Piper looked fantastic in this elongated shorts suit last year.

Tessa Thompson at Wimbledon

Could anyone look chicer than Tessa Thompson? The actor paired high-waisted white trousers with cowboy boots at the tournament in 2019, proving that the suit still has potential to look super cool.

Because temperatures can get fierce, whether you're in the stands or Henman Hill, try and sleeveless vest instead of a blazer.

Description

This particular vest can be bought with the matching trousers, blazer and shirt; the ideal capsule workwear/occasionwear wardrobe.
