We’re calling it: after seeing the beyond-sublime stills from Anne Boleyn, the seed has been sowed for a brand new social media trend: ‘Tudorcore’.
Jodie Turner-Smith plays the ill-fated queen in the three-part psychological thriller – coming soon to Channel 5 and dealing with the final few months of her life – and looks fittingly magisterial in the few costumes we’ve seen so far. One gown is a sumptuous, square-necked number in brilliant emerald, the other a more sombre arrangement of midnight-coloured velvet. Both are worn with her signature choker-style necklace, a string of pearls hanging with a weighty gold ‘B’. The newly-released picture shows resting her head on the shoulder of Mark Stanley's Henry VIII.
The small screen, acting as one of our only escapes into the wider world at the moment, has been influencing our wardrobes like never before since lockdown 1.0. First came Normal People, then The Queen’s Gambit, and who, pray tell, could forget Bridgerton? It was this romping romance that prepared the ground for ‘Regencycore’, giving shoppers a free pass to indulge in empire-line dresses and elbow-length gloves.
So what can we expect from Tudorcore? Looking at the stills of Turner-Smith, the headband, especially ones with some height, are really going to come into their own on Zoom. Ditto pearls and square-necklines, which both fit nicely into our ‘waist-up’ way of life. And as one of the biggest red carpet risk-takers there is, Turner-Smith is going to bring some serious magic to the promo trail. We already can’t wait.
