Sandal season is here, there's no point trying to avoid it. And while the thought of bringing your feet out of hibernation might make you want to call in sick to start pumicing and panting, it does mean that you can free your toes from their closed-shoe prisons, ultimately cooling you down when it matters the most. In fact, take this as me announcing that the time has officially come to relinquish boots, embrace ventilation, and re-familiarise yourself with a pedicure.
As someone who lives in sandals from April to October regardless of the (usually unpromising) forecast, I take my sandals seriously. This summer, the sandal offering (from both the high street and designers) is genuinely exciting - from smart flip-flops that will serve you all-summer-long, to the naked sandals that have come straight from the archives of the '90s. On the runway, the trends have been somewhat difficult to ignore - with Simone Rocha giving the classic fisherman sandal a pearl-adorned twist and Alaïa reimagining the flip flop into something far cooler than what your dad would wear on holiday. Woven textures, too, have also been a key trend, with styles emerging from both Jil Sander and Bottega that include basket-style leather and artisanal finishes. An of course, the high street has no shortage of on-trend styles - just look at Zara's viral toe-ring sandals which have just made a comeback after selling out last year.

Walking sandals

Not a joke: thick soles, velcro and solid ankle straps no longer belong exclusively to the orthopaedic shoe market. Oh no – dad sandals, the kind yours would pack on a walking holiday, are officially in. (Birkenstock's are a perennial favourite among fashion editors, who like to wear them with chunky socks in winter and beaded anklets in summer).

www.schuh.co.uk
The Birkenstock Arizona is a classic summer sandal, particularly because of its reputation as the comfiest summer sandal. These sandals are so iconic, and for good reason, namely because of its anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed that's super comfortable, but also its skin-friendly and hard-wearing design.
Gemma says: 'I've had my Birkenstock Arizona's for so long I can't even remember what sandal I used to wear in the summer before that and honestly, now I wouldn't want to wear much else. Birkenstock Arizona's really are the best of the best, the shoe comes in various different colours (I went for the lime green) and are also ridiculously comfort - plus, they always come up true to size on my narrow feet.'
Pros
- Features a signature Birkenstock footbed that provides arch support
- Birkenstock sandals are known for durability and can last for years with proper care
- Good for those with flat feet or arch pain
Cons
- Some Birkenstock's require a break-in period
Sizes | UK 3-8 |
Colours | White, Black |
Materials | Leather, Eva |

A pair of Birkenstock sandals you might not be so well acquainted with is the Mayari sandal. A design that still has the elements of a classic Birkenstock design but feels more modern and suited to a narrower foot, the Mayari has a toe crossover and thinner straps. Available in a colour selection that rivals the popular Arizona style, a couple of standouts include the black, 'Bordeaux' red and brown.
Marina says: 'As much as I've always loved the Birkenstock vibe, I'd always struggled with chunky sandals due to my tiny size 3 feet. Any time I slipped into a pair of Arizonas it looked like I was playing dress up in my dad's closet, which resulted in me steering clear for the longest time - but then something changed. Enter: The Birkenstock Mayaris. As soon as made eye contact with the Mayaris, I knew we'd be friends. The slightly chicer toe-loop strap lends itself well to those with smaller feet, as well as those who don't want to lean into the fully 'hippy' vibe of the Arizonas. I've had my Mayaris for four years - and counting - and wore them for one month every single day on my trip to Mexico. Their current condition? Still perfect.'
Pros
- The Mayari design is known for its contoured footbed and provides good arch support
- Good for individuals with smaller feet
- Can either be dressed up or down
Cons
- Some find the Mayari style comes up quite narrow and smaller than other sized Birkenstocks

Colours | Various colours available, including: Black, Brown, Beige, Pink |
Materials | Leather |

www.schuh.co.uk
If you're liking the look of the Birkenstock Arizona sandal, but are worried about the cork bottom as it's not overly waterproof, the brand have also released a version made from a highly flexible and lightweight EVA that's completely waterproof. Handy for dips in the sea and walks on the beach, the Arizona EVA is a good choice for those who value having summer sandals they can wear in various different settings.
Gemma says: 'Before I bought my Birkenstock Arizona's I bought the Arizona Eva's, purely persuaded by its waterproofness as I'm someone who likes to walk their sandals all the way up until the edge of the pool. The Arizona Eva's work perfectly for me, the sandals are super comfortable, soft and are a lot easier to clean than the classic iteration.'
Pros
- A lightweight and waterproof alternative to the classic Arizona
- Features Birkenstock's signature contoured footbed that's super comfortable
- Easy to clean
Cons
- EVA is not as durable as leather and might wear down faster
Sizes | UK 3-8 |
Colours | Black, Navy, Khaki, Papaya |

Russell & Bromley's fisherman sandals are not only highly practical, because of its caged detailing and leather-lined footbed, but are also on-trend too. The jelly shoe is making a resurgence and not to everyone's approval. Yes, it's a little bit of a love-it-or-hate-it kind of shoe but courtesy of The Row SS24, the jelly shoe is back. Our favourite? This style from Ancient Greek Sandals, made out of a rubber upper and available in several different colourways that include a black and fun clear red.

Toe ring sandals

The toe ring sandal trend came as somewhat of an unexpected one at the end of summer last year, but it looks like its back for 2025. If you want to add some sparkle to your toes, opt for a pair of embellished sandals as an alternative to heels - and your feet will thank you for it too.

www.zara.com
These are selling out quick and for good reason - coming in at £29.99 the Zara toe ring sandals come fashion influencer-approved. Made from a sleek leather-look material, the Zara sandals have a subtle gold toe strap that adds just the right amount of elevation - whether you're heading to a garden party, wedding, or to the office.
Gemma says: 'I managed to get my hands on these Zara toe ring sandals at the end of summer last year and I really didn't get enough wear out of them - so I'm so glad the sandals are back this year. I must admit, Zara's sandals are a little thin at the sole to walk long distances in - but saying that, the sole is comfortable for shorter distances and the toe ring really does add something different.'

Raffia sandals
Raffia and crochet sandals have made a departure from its usual beach settings in 2025, as this spring/summer, designers are elevating the fibre from laid-back to luxe. Chloé's crochet flatforms and Gucci's chunky soled dad sandals prove that raffia is no longer just a holiday essential, but an everyday one too.

www.flannels.com
The ultimate summer sandal comes in the form of a raffia look (of course to match your tote bag). This pair from Prada are particularly warm weather appropriate and look so summery thanks to its raffia crochet design. The sandals aren't just aesthetic easier, as the rubber sole and hook and loop straps keep your foot in place and also make sure its comfortable as you walk.
Gemma says: 'My raffia Prada sandals get so much wear in the summer, I think the main reason for that is the beige colourway. Beige is perhaps the most worn colour in my wardrobe and goes with most neutrals I already own, so my theory is to just throw the sandals on with any outfit and hope for the best. Plus, the rubber sole makes them practical for wearing out to dinner and also to the beach.'

Open weave sandals

Ballet flats are a good alternative to a classic summer sandal and for 2025 it's all about the open weave. Airy mesh and intricate crochet marry practicality with a summer shoe that leaves your toes still covered (especially helpful if you live in the city). Miu Miu and Dear Frances lead the charge with lattice-like designs that channel off-duty dancer, while Alaïa reinterprets the classic flat with laser-cut leather.

www.farfetch.com
Dear Frances' ballet flats have become quite the icon, so much so that its cult Balla design inspired hundreds of designs we see on the high street everyday. The woven Balla style is perfectly practical, thanks to its somewhat closed toe, but also is breathable in the same way a flip flop is. The only downside is getting your hands on a pair.
Hannah says: 'I know these are technically more shoe than sandal but, thanks to the open weave, they're way more breathable than your typical ballet pumps. They offer more coverage, though, which is particularly great considering I live in London, where bare toes aren't always practical (or desirable, especially not on the tube). I lived in them last summer and have already been wearing them a lot in the past few weeks, thanks to the glorious spring we've been enjoying. They look good with everything and are so comfortable, too.'
Pros
- Breathable open toe that's excellent for warmer weather
- On-trend ballet flat design that goes with everything you already own
- Crafted by hand in Italy, indicating a focus on quality
Cons
- Some Dear Frances designs can sell out quickly

Platform sandals

Chunky platform sandals are not for the faint-hearted but are guaranteed to make an impact (plus, they hold up better on grass than spindly stilettos - a wedding season win).

www.dunelondon.com
Stilettos might look nice, but the style does hurt your feet after a while. So, for a more practical choice why not go for a pair of platform sandals that look just as chic but won't hurt your feet half as much? This design from Dune is a particular standout, thanks to its brown colouring, wood-look platform soles and gold buckle straps.
Pros
- Clasp fastening and back strap for comfort

Best summer sandals: FAQs
What are the most comfortable summer sandals?
The most wearable sandals this summer are the ones that strike the balance between support and simplicity (you want a pair that's going to go with everything). Birkenstock Arizona's remain a favourite for a reason - versatile yet have a moulded footbed that supports your arches. For something more polished, fisherman sandals are having a real moment and Russell & Bromley's pair offers structured without stiffness, while Anthropologie's style has a slightly softer feel.
What sandals never go out of style?
Some sandals never fall out of favour. Minimalist flop flops are a Scandi-girl go-to, working just as well with wide leg trousers as they do with floaty midi dresses. Gladiator and fisherman styles make a quiet return every few seasons too. Birkenstocks - once divisive - have become a staple thanks to its balance of comfort and design.
What sandals are good for sweaty feet in summer?
If you suffer with particularly sweaty feet in summer then you're not alone - and there are also sandals that can help. Prioritise breathable fabrics like leather and suede that wick away moisture rather than trap it (leave your plastic pairs for the poolside). Styles with minimal foot coverage - like barely-there sandals or toe-ring designs - let air circulate, keeping your feet cooler for longer. Plus, flatforms are good if the design has a cushioned and moisture-wicking sole for all-day wear.
Who makes the best sandals?
There are several brands known for making the best sandals. Of course, you could head to the high street for brands like Anthropologie, Free People and Zara if you want a pair of sandals that are super affordable. However, if you're looking for a more specialist pair of sandals then you might want to research the likes of Birkenstock, FitFlop and Alohas.
What colour sandals go with everything?
If you're looking for a pair of sandals that will go with everything you already have in your summer wardrobe, then you need to invest in sandals in neutral colours. A sleek sandal is a failsafe for everything from brunch to beach bars, while a nude hue will elongate your leg and melt into any outfit without fuss. For something more avant garde, opt for a metallic - gold or silver - as it will make a statement, but won't take over your entire outfit.
What type of sandals can you wear with a dress?
For an occasion that requires you to be more polished - like a wedding for example - a simple leather sandal or kitten heel will work well and keep you looking smart while wearing a gorgeous spring dress. Alternatively, for an everyday sandal you're going to want to choose a flat sandal or classic flip flop for an easy win. Or, if your dress is more structured or dressy, a platform sandal or even a toe ring sandal will elevate the look.
