Sarah Michelle Gellar was a style icon in the early '00s (and still is now).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's pilot aired just two years before another smash-hit series from the '90s: Sex and the City. And while the former's fashion didn't quite get as much air-time as the latter's, there was plenty to be learned from Sarah Michelle Gellar. The actor is now back on the promo trail for Wolf Pack - tagline: 'prey for survival' - and as polished as the outfits have been so far, we've also fallen down a rabbit hole when it comes to her most famous onscreen alter-ego. On The Graham Norton Show, Sarah Michelle very graciously said that she didn't mind people referencing Buffy, but that she would rather they didn't keep saying that two decades have passed since the final episode had aired so that she could preserve a little more mystique around her age. The same goes for us stans. Nevertheless, there were plenty of style lessons to be learned from the vampire slayer.

The Leather Coat

Neo had one - and so does Buffy. It's the fantasy hero's calling card: a leather coat. Funnily enough, it's also huge on new generations of fashion influencers who won't stop mining the late-'90s and early '00s.

The Knee-High Boot

As well as layered haircut that looks very Rachel Green, Buffy was no stranger to a short hemline (which never seemed to get in the way of slaying vampires) which she paired with square-toed knee-high boots. Both elements are back in the fashion, but, considering the temperatures of late, the latter feels more relevant for now.

The Velour Tracksuit

Now that's more like it - a '00s velour tracksuit (what up, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton) feels like a more appropriate choice for fighting bad guys. Shoppers still can't get enough of these.

The Strappy Top

Another miniskirt, but this time paired with a spaghetti-strap top that was the lynchpin of all my summer holiday outfits in the early 00s. Nowadays, the fashion crowd loves the strappy's top's slightly more covered up cousin, the tank top, but there's still a lot of love for the original on TikTok.
