Fashion nostalgia, the renting revolution and wardrobe longevity are all getting bigger by the minute and, this morning, Holly Willoughby managed tick off all three before most of us drank our first coffee. Posting her daily outfit on Instagram, the presenter revealed that she had borrowed a very special dress for her 40th birthday - the very same one that her mum wore to celebrate her 40th.
The dress in question is a peplum-waisted floral number with some shoulder padding thrown in for good measure. And while Mrs Willoughby wore hers with movie stars shades and classic peep-toe pumps, her daughter mixed things up with her signature barely-there sandals. Posting on Instagram, she said: 'This photo of my Mum was taken on her 40th birthday at the party she had in the garden. I remember this day so clearly. It’s a strange thing to reach the age you remember your Mum being!...I asked her if she’d kept the dress and of course she had...Strange moment zipping it up this morning, wondering how she felt on her big day...I can’t be with my Mum or Dad today but wearing this in her honour makes me feel closer to them... love you Mumma!'
As a fan of renting - one of our favourites was a holly berry red dress from The Vampire's Wife, but borrowed from HURR - Willoughby is a daily reminder that we don't need to buy (or even rent for that matter) to deliver fashion joy. No, for that all you need is a willing mum, sister, friend or, even, neighbour to give you access to their wardrobe. What's mine is yours, right?
