A soggy red carpet didn’t deter Hollywood’s stars from flashing the flesh at last night’s 80th Golden Globes ceremony – arguably the unofficial kick-off to the award season. The overarching trend? Undressed dressing is going nowhere.
2022 was the year of the naked dress – remember Kim Kardashian’s iconic Marilyn Monroe moment at the Met Gala? – and celebrities got the bare-all dressing memo.
Gossamer-thin sheer fabrics, cut-out details and plenty of cleavage made their way down the red carpet in the form of Anya Taylor-Joy’s midriff-flaunting bandeau two-piece from Dior, Daisy Edgar-Jones in a lingerie-inspired corset dress by Gucci and Lily James’ peekaboo waist in a Versace gown, designed in the same shade of red as the iconic swimsuit she worn while playing Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy.
Shoulders were the erogenous zone of the evening, with a plethora of strapless gowns on show – from Ana de Armas in a column-like Louis Vuitton dress to Selena Gomez in Valentino. Although she skipped the red carpet, Rhianna also took the plunge, in a black velvet custom gown from Schiaparelli.
Black, too, was firmly back - blame the newly minted Wednesday star Jenna Ortega for the grown-up goth revival. (Ironically, the actress opted for an intricately placed tan Gucci gown, yet still served Wednesday-inspired gothic make-up). It proved the winning colour of the night, as all-round icon Jennifer Coolidge picked up an award in a shimmering black Dolce & Gabbana gown, as did Michelle Yeoh, who accepted her Best Actress award in a sequinned black Giorgio Armani peplum dress. Proof strapless can be chic.
