There are those days of hibernation when after half a tray of M&S tiramisu, even your elasticated waistband trackies start to feel uncomfortable. Not because they’re too tight, but because they’re not tight enough. What is required is a piece of clothing that is comfortable and keeps the dairy-induced bloating in check. The corset hoodie ticks both boxes – squeezy does it!
The corset hoodie, you ask? Yes, the corset hoodie. A sartorial oxymoron, for sure, but one that is actually happening IRL. Don’t believe us? At Coachella, rapper Bad Bunny, who is known to take a fashion risk (see his backless Met Gala suit), performed on stage wearing a custom zip-up hoodie featuring sheer boning by Mugler. And speaking of Mugler, in the upcoming high street collaboration with H&M, the brand has reissued a similar style, which is set to make tills ring.

What’s more, Celine, too, has an upscale iteration on offer, made from grey cashmere and it comes with £1,200 price tag. It defeats the purpose of a hoodie (namely, to swaddle yourself in absolute comfort) but falls in line with fashion’s proclivity for a boudoir-inspired wardrobe. Throw an ongoing liaison with the '00s into the mix and what have you got? A Westwood corset-cum-souvenir-hoodie. It’s a lucrative business – and not just for mega brands.

The independent designer Timothy Gibbons, too, has whipped up a collection of restrictive loungewear, using iconic New York City and Madonna tour merch that he’s reworked into hooded corsets. Retailing at around £225, all available styles have sold out.
They might not have hit the bus stop just yet but it’s only a matter of time until fashion’s new favourite cosy will make your (or your teenager’s) Sunday-at-home wardrobe a bit less comfortable. You heard it here first.
