For her homecoming show in the heart of London, Sarah Burton decided to erect an enormous bubble on the roof of a multi-storey carpark. The reason? For SS22, Alexander McQueen's creative director looked upwards for inspiration. 'In the studio, we're surrounded by the sky. To me, the sky can be beautiful, it can be turbulent, it can be passionate, it can be frightening, it can dangerous. I wanted to express that in the collection,' she said backstage. And although the weather outside was crisp and clear, there was a mixture of elements on the catwalk, from clouds floating across midnight blue frocks to spangled tank dresses that moved and looked like sheets of rain.
'We are part of nature and nature is beyond our control. We have to respect it,' said Burton, who spent time with her team documenting cloud patterns from daybreak to nightfall and, ultimately, storm-chasing, an activity you can well imagine this woman, dressed for the elements in a trench coat with parachute sleeves or a leather bustier dress, participating in.
Not to mention the star-studded front row, including Emilia Clarke, Lara Stone, Christine and the Queens, Soko, Sonam Kapoor, Maxim Magnus, Malachi Kirby, Daphne Guinness and Yahya Abdul Mateen.
'Storm chasing is not only about the beauty of the views but also a sense of mystery and excitement – about embracing the fact that we can’t ever be sure of what might happen next.' With Naomi Campbell closing the show wearing a cropped jacket with crystal raindrop embroidery over a skeletal corset dress, we'd say that was mission accomplished.
