In the end, it was one of the simpler looks that became the defining moment of the spring/summer 2023 catwalks: Kate Moss in a flannel shirt, a tank top and baggy jeans at Bottega Veneta. Of course, it wasn’t any old flannel shirt – it’s made from leather (just like the jeans and tank) and retails for £4,300 – but it set the tone nonetheless. Real clothes for real people, or, as the creative director of the house, Matthieu Blazy, put it: it’s all about 'casual comfort'.
And who better to road test the newly found comfort of casual comfort than the ultimate girl-next-door Katie Holmes? Her throw-on-and-go get-up comprised of all the elements that make up one of her signature looks: a dialled-down staple (the flannel) loosely tucked into a pair of slouchy jeans, a classic pair of shoes and – for privacy purposes – a baseball cap.
This isn’t the first time Holmes has put her spin on everyday wardrobe staples. Remember the cardigan + knitted bra, anyone? And, frankly, she’s doing us a favour: the industry is not short of celebrities photographed in more casual than smart looks, but it can always use fashion originals who have a knack for looking effortlessly put-together in pieces the rest of us would never conceive of – especially when it’s a catwalk trend.
