Despite not having been in the industry long, Emma Mackey has already made her mark starring in critically acclaimed TV shows - such as Sex Education – and films like Emily, for which she won the BAFTA Rising Star Award at the weekend.

Emma currently lives in London, but was born in Le Mans, France. She moved to England in 2013 to study English at the University of Leeds and hasn’t moved back.

Speaking about the character of Maeve, Emma described her as, ‘The archetypal bad girl, you know, the kind of emo kid who’s kind of left out. Maybe a bit grumpy and a bit scary. But after the first episode you realise that’s not the case at all.

‘She’s got so much more going on – she’s clever, she’s pragmatic, she’s funny, she’s cynical. She’s got a really tough exterior and she has loads of defence mechanisms because she doesn’t want to let anybody in and doesn’t want to be hurt. And then you realise that even in the moments where she’s struggling the most in her own life, she’s still able to be a friend to people and still be warm and caring, which is amazing.’

Will Emma Mackey be returning for Sex Education series five?

Speaking at the BAFTAs on Sunday, Emma confirmed the rumours that series four will be Maeve’s last, saying, ‘I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.’

The last we saw of Maeve in series three was her finally sharing a kiss with Otis before revealing to him that she was all set to move to America for an international study programme. Hopefully we won’t be left hanging by their will they/ won’t they!

Who did Emma Mackey play in Death on the Nile?

Emma starred as Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ de Bellefort in this follow-up to Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express released in 2017.
