It’s the rumour currently breaking the internet: the Spice Girls are reportedly set to reunite for the first time in over a decade for King Charles's coronation in May. The five-some are rumoured to be planning a special concert broadcast live from Windsor Castle, having not been seen on stage together since the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
Now, rumours of a Spice Girls reunion do seem come around once every six months, with fans struggling to believe Victoria Beckham would abandon her fashion empire for a breathy performance on the mic again with her former 90s girl group. We should note that this rumour is also coming directly from ‘a source’ at The Sun, but let’s be honest - if they were to ever reunite for anything, a royal coronation would probably be it.
‘Royal organisers are super keen to secure Britain’s biggest girl band and the Spice Girls are seriously pondering a return to the stage as a five piece for such a historical event,’ the source told the publication. ‘Certainly, the reality is that the coronation is as special as The Olympics - a one off celebration and unique performance. There is a general sense that a reunion could happen for something this significant.’
And Mel B actually put some weight behind the rumour herself last week, hinting to some kind of collaboration between all five of the women in an interview with The View. ‘I can’t tell you exactly, but there’s going to be something that is going to be announced pretty soon,’ she said. ‘It is a project that we’re very excited about. It will be all five of us.’
King Charles's Coronation is set to take place over three days from May 6 and will include two grand processions, a religious service, a star-studded concert held at Windsor Castle, and a day of volunteering.
The online reaction to the Spice Girls' potential appearance has certainly been wild, with shock and excitement making for hilarious memes.
Now we’re just waiting for official word from the women themselves. Fingers crossed for a return to the ultra 90s costumes too – they’d certainly fit in with the nostalgia-obsessed Gen-Z.
