Selena Gomez has opened up about her wedding plans with Benny Blanco. The Only Murders In The Building star, who is engaged to music producer and songwriterBlanco, said that she's hoping her co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin will play a key part in their big day.
'Marty is due to give a speech. I told him he must... I feel like Marty would have an epic speech,' she told Drew Barrymore on her chat show. Gomez also joked how Steve Martin would 'probably pull out his banjo'.
When Barrymore suggested that the pair - Martin, 79, and Short, 75 - could officiate the ceremony, Gomez said, 'Oh my gosh! I hadn't even thought about that.'
Her wedding plans came after she also reflected on her former loves and past relationships, as she spoke about how she has learned ‘a lot of lessons’ and admitted how she has been ‘very reactive’ in the past.
‘I’ve been guilty though to start. I think for me, I necessarily felt like in other situations of mine I was very reactive,’ she told author and life coach Jay Shetty on his On Purpose podcast. ‘I think that’s why I was alone for five years because I really needed to collect myself.’
In the joint interview with her fiancé, Gomez – whose famous exes include Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas and Zayn Malik – said it has taken her time to mature and she wouldn’t have felt emotionally ready to be with Blanco in previous years.
‘I think in the past, that’s why I said to him all the time ten years ago it’s not that I wouldn’t have wanted to be with you, I just wouldn’t have been in the right headspace, and I don’t think you deserved what I had gone through before,’ she said. ‘I’ve learned a lot of lessons and I’ve made mistakes and I just want this to be right. So for me, that was a lesson that I had to learn.’ She added, ‘I think girls can equally want to be right. For me, it was really difficult in the past and he's made it unbelievably easy so that if I even get to the point where I’m so frustrated, he's like very quick to understand.’
Blanco, 37, revealed that he tried to set Gomez up with his friends after he was convinced she ‘hated’ him. He added that it has taken work to grow their relationship. ‘I’d say at the beginning there were a few almost-sabotages. At the very beginning, in her first few trips away, she was still gaining that trust,’ he said, to which she replied, ‘I had sincere doubt.’
‘When you start dating someone you’re not only dating them, you’re also dating every single person they’ve ever dated,’ he explained. ‘You’re getting every piece of baggage that person’s had. With partners, parents, this that. I had to find a way to build that trust with her, not being overbearing but make it feel real and make her actually believe it and vice versa.’
Having met when he worked as a co-producer for her single Same Old Love in 2015, Gomez and Blanco started dating in 2023 and went public with their relationship in December that year. ‘He is my absolutely everything in my heart,’ she said in a now-deleted post.
The couple, who have released a collaborative album I Said I Love You First, got engaged in December 2024. ‘Forever begins now,’ Gomez wrote, sharing a photo of her engagement ring.
Blanco revealed he has learned to reassure her and her doubts. ‘I’ll talk to you through anything you may have,’ he told Gomez.
He added, ‘I’m aware of her strengths and I’m aware of her weakness and so what I’ve tried to do is surround her with things that help. She doesn’t need a lot, she’s like the easiest person in the world but I know she wants to talk to me before bed, wants me to say “I love you” and text if I end up having to stay somewhere two hours late. I know that stuff really helps especially when you’re long distance.’
