Michaela Coel 's incredible drama, I May Destroy You, won big at last night's Emmys - and Michaela gave the speech of the evening. The 12-part series - executive produced by Michaela, and based loosely on her own experiences with sexual assault - was awarded Best Writing, and Michaela delivered a powerful speech, dedicating her award to all survivors of sexual assault.

Michaela was also nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, for her role as writer Arabella, who, throughout the series, navigates the aftermath of being sexually assaulted on a night out. When accepting the award, the director also encouraged screenwriters to get out of their comfort zone when creating - and to not be frightened to disconnect from an increasingly online world.

'Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable,' the 33-year-old said. 'I dare you — in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success — do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence. I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault.'

At the ceremony, Michaela opted for a neon yellow Christopher John Rogers crop top and high-waisted skirt, styled by Zerina Akers.

It's yet another award for the remarkable series, as according to Metacritic, I May Destroy You was most critically acclaimed television programme of 2020. At the BAFTAs, it won Best Mini-Series, Best Director: Drama, Best Writer: Drama and Best Actress.
