Kanye West has gifted Kim Kardashian with his fair share of lavish birthday gifts, and this year was no different – although there was a slight twist. For her 39th birthday, West gave Kardashian $1 million (£776,770) in charity donations, also signed from her four children.
Posting the gift to her Instagram Story yesterday, Kardashian revealed that her husband had donated to four criminal justice reform charities in her name. The charities included Cut 50, Equal Justice Initiative and Anti-Recidivism Coalition.
Each of the charities has since reached out thanking Kardashian for the donation, which will be used to help ‘transform the US justice system’ according to Cut 50. The cause has proven close to Kardashian’s heart in the last few years and is the reason she is training to become a lawyer.
Earlier this year, it was reported that she had secretly helped free 17 inmates in 90 days as part of the 90 Days of Freedom campaign launched by her lawyer, Brittany K. Barnett. She was also monumental in the high-profile case of granting clemency to Alice-Marie Johnson this year.
‘The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency, and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there like, “Oh, shit. I need to know more”,’ she told Vogue earlier this year.
'I would say what I had to say about the human side and why this is so unfair but I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case,’ she continued. ‘It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.’
And so it seems that while some may lament a charity donation as a birthday gift, Kardashian would clearly appreciate more being done to help change the US justice system in her name. After all, what do you get the woman who has everything?
