If we can count on any two people to talk sense mid-celebrity scandal, it’s Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. The couple have been placed front and center of the Kanye West Twitter book debacle, which has seen him publically endorse Donald Trump to the extent of posting pictures wearing a signed Make America Great Again hat.
West’s strange relationship with Trump has been known for some time, however many of his public statements about the President have been attempts to prove that we can have different political views yet still enjoy the same music, not necessarily supporting Trump but supporting inclusivity of all political views in music.
However, in a series of tweets since returning to social media last Monday, West has caused further controversy by not only stating that he and Trump have the same ‘dragon energy’ but also calling out Obama for not doing enough for West's home town of Chicago.
Now, John Legend has attempted to give West a dose of reality in a private text conversation that West posted to his ever-intensifying Twitter feed. Legend wrote:
‘Hey it’s JL. I hope you’ll reconsider aligning yourself with Trump. You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for. As you know, what you say really means something to your fans. They are loyal to you and respect your opinion. So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of colour. Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.'
While West appeared to take the criticism with love, he essentially accused Legend of trying to manipulate him by responding, ‘I love you John and I appreciate your thoughts. You bringing up my legacy is a tactic based on fear used to manipulate my free thought.’
Posting the conversation to his social media, West justified releasing the private messages by saying, ‘I tweeted the John text to show that there are people around me that disagree with me and voice their opinion. I respect everyone's opinion but I stand my ground,' then continuing, 'If you feel something don't let peer pressure manipulate you.'
In a typical Legend/Teigen style response, John appeared to take it all in his stride, replying ‘Think freely. Think with empathy and context too. Your words and actions have consequences. Much love. And since you’re posting texts, let me add that I have a new single out haha.'
We’d put money on Chrissy being the genius behind that closing line, to which West replied ‘Haha, I love you John.’
The appeal to West by Legend comes after calls for Chrissy Teigen to comment on the ongoing scandal, which she has spoken out about herself, tweeting:
‘Everyone keeps asking me to comment on shit. Comment on psycho Tami Lasagna, whom I refuse to give the joy to, say something about RHOA, speak up about kanye. When it comes to people we know, we DO speak up. To THEM. not on Twitter. And sometimes, I guess it makes it to Twitter.’
Both Teigen and Legend’s responses are being praised on social media for being on point as always. And while Legend’s appeals may have gone ignored by West, we can only hope his message sinks in and helps Kanye rethink his stance given his almost 30-million strong following.
