Christian power couple Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber have revealed that they waited until marriage to sleep with each other.
‘God doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,’ Justin explained, adding: ‘He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain.
'I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that.’
In a joint interview with his wife, his first chat with the press in two years, the singer confessed to Vogue that their unwillingness to have sex before marriage was part of the reason they tied the knot relatively young, aged 22 and 24. That doesn’t mean Justin was a virgin at the time of their 2018 marriage though, as he also admitted that he once had ‘a legitimate problem with sex’.
‘I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed.
‘Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing. It got pretty dark. I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing.’
Now, though, things are far better. Justin now steers clear of drugs and only drinks socially. Living together in Toronto, he and Hailey ‘fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship,’ she said.
Though the pair were married after dating for three years, following a brief fling in December 2015 to January 2016, they’ve known each other for ages. First meeting in 2009, when she was 12 and he was 14. Hailey thought Justin would only ever be a friend, but later, ‘One day, Justin walked into Hillsong [their church] and was like “Hey, you got older” I was like “Yeah, what’s up?”
“Over time he became my best guy friend. I was running around with him as his homie, but we weren’t hanging out [romantically].’
Things haven't always smooth-sailing, because: ’Negative things happened that we still need to talk about and work through,' Hailey said, adding: ‘Fizzled would not be the right word—it was more like a very dramatic excommunication. There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.'
Yet they’re working through it all, because they love God and they love each other: ‘When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,’ Justin gushed, adding: 'I was like, "Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for".'
Confusingly, for all this god chat, Justin also said that he ‘wouldn’t consider myself religious’ even though he goes to church, because while believes in Jesus, and attends Hillsong, known as the hipster church where all the pastors have shiny teeth and Yeezy boosts, ‘I don’t believe in all the religious elitism and pretentiousness.’
He also acknowledged that religion has historically ‘been used to hurt a lot of people’, so doesn’t want to be associated with that side of it.
What he does want, though, is the perks of rededicating himself to god i.e. getting to sleep with his lovely wife: ‘I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behaviour.'
