How Was Faye’s Outburst On Love Island The Thing We Got Angriest About This Year?

Did Faye - who was misled by producers - really deserve almost 25,000 complaints?

If there's one thing that's true, British people love to complain. And every year, we find out just what they've been outraged about while watching the TV, as the figures for the year's Ofcom complaints are released.

This year, people got in touch with the TV regulator in record numbers - and complaints to the regulator increased by 124%, with 150,000 complaints. But there were two incidents driving the majority of complaints: Piers Morgan's comments about Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain (the comments made by Piers were so heinous Markle herself personally complained to ITV and Ofcom). And, less outrageous, Faye Winter and Teddy Soares' row on Love Island.

54,595 complaints were made about Morgan (who has an odd obsession with the Duchess{ =nofollow}), and 24,921 complaints were about Faye's behaviour, which many thought was unjustified.

It goes without saying that nearly 25,000 is a huge number of complaints. It was the most for any episode of Love Island ever, even though - in our personal opinion - it definitely wasn't the worst moment. (Faye's behaviour even got more complaints than the arrival of bombshell Danny Bibby, after it was reported by many news sites that he had used a racial slur on Instagram. In comparison, Danny was complained about only 1,500 times.)

In case you need a reminder, Faye was incandescent with rage after she was shown a clip of her now-boyfriend, Teddy Soares, saying he was sexually attracted to Clarisse Juliettè. Yet viewers at home saw a different story - as that clip was shown without context. Unlike most of the other men, Teddy was totally loyal to Faye during his time in Casa Amor, even sleeping outside. But it wasn't Faye's fault that she got so angry - she was misled by producers.

Later, Faye did admit her wrongs and apologise - and she's managed to build a large fanbase on Instagram. After she left the villa, Faye apologised for her blow up and exclusively revealed to Grazia that she regretted how it played out. ‘There were times I dealt with it completely wrongly,’ she said. ‘And everyone unfortunately got to see that.’

‘I’d be lying if I said that when I saw 25,000 complaints, I wasn’t upset – I was already embarrassed about the situation,’ she added. Ofcom later dismissed the complaints, saying, ‘We consider the scenes were within viewers’ likely expectations of this programme’s established format.’
