Dakota Johnson appeared on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show, The Ellen Show, last week and a painfully awkward conversation about her birthday party ensued. After DeGeneres accused her of not inviting her to her 30th birthday party in October, Johnson held nothing back in correcting her – subsequently giving us the most hilarious example of passive-aggressive behaviour we’ve ever seen.
‘So, how was your birthday party? I wasn’t invited,’ Ellen said almost immediately after the interview began. ‘Actually, that’s not the truth Ellen, you were invited,’ Johnson replied, before explaining that she had had a similar conversation about a previous birthday party with Ellen the last time she was on the show but back then didn’t think DeGeneres would want to come.
‘Who doesn’t want to be invited to a party?’ DeGeneres said, before Johnson smiled back with ‘Well I didn’t even know you liked me.’
Continuing on with the awkward conversation, Johnson went on to prove that DeGeneres was actually invited this year – even telling her to ask her producer Jonathon (and ‘everybody’) at which point he confirmed, DeGeneres was in fact invited. And that’s when it got really awkward.
Because, it turns out DeGeneres was ‘out of town’ during the party – and not just on a little trip away; oh no, she was on the fateful Texas trip where she was seen watching a Dallas Cowboys game with George W. Bush. After those pictures circulated, DeGeneres received a ton of backlash for maintaining the friendship.
DeGeneres defended herself at the time saying ‘I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs I have. We’re all different and I think we’ve forgotten that’s okay. Just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean I’m not going to be friends with them.’
Naturally, that excuse didn’t fly with a lot of people. And nor did her excuse for missing Johnson’s birthday – apparently Malibu, where the party was held, was ‘too far to go to’.
Nodding and smiling politely, the conversation took a turn for the even more hilarious when DeGeneres asked about Johnson’s party performer, comedian Tig Notaro, and Johnson said, ‘She’s hilarious, she’s my favourite comedian’. As DeGeneres’s face dropped, Johnson added a laughing ‘other than you!’.
‘I was just talking to my favourite actress the other day, Jennifer Anniston,’ DeGeneres responded. And while you would hope the awkward exchange would stop there, DeGeneres took the opportunity to bring up Johnson’s boyfriend, Chris Martin, asking if she saw him at an event they’d both attended.
Naturally, everyone is obsessed with the super awkward, passive aggressive interview – mostly with Johnson’s ability to call DeGeneres out for her uncomfortable line of questioning in such a hilarious way.
