Brie Larson is in talks to play Captain Marvel, one of the most popular (and powerful) female superheroes in the comicbook universe.
While the casting is yet to be confirmed, industry sources have told Variety magazine that the Room actress is the studio's first choice for the role - and Brie is reportedly keen to get on board, too.
If the Oscar winning actress decides to take the role, she will be the first female Marvel character to take the title role in a film. The Captain Marvel adaptation is slated for release in 2019, but the chances are that we'd be treated to a preview of the character in the forthcoming Captain America flick, Infinity War Part One.
Unless you're well versed in Marvel lore, you're probably thinking, 'Yeah, go Brie! But who the heck is Captain Marvel?' Here's the top line: One of Marvel's best-loved female superheroes, Captain Marvel starts out as Carol Danvers, a US pilot whose DNA accidentally gets spliced with that of an alien, leaving her with superhuman strength. She's also been touted as one of the first feminist superheroes. Pretty cool, all in all, particularly given the fact that the Captain Marvel film will be written by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, the screenwriters behind hits like Inside Out and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Following the runaway success of Room and a stellar run through awards season, the 26-year-old, who recently got engaged to her boyfriend Alex Greenwald, has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading ladies. She is currently shooting The Glass Castle, an adaptation of a memoir by journalist Jeanette Walls, and has roles lined up in Free Fire, Basmati Blues and Kong: Skull Island.
