Move over Drunk Elephant and Sol de Janeiro, there’s a new TikTok star in town – and it’s your Granny’s favourite soap. Enter the not-so-humble Pears, which has actually been kicking about since 1807. Proving that Gen Z aren’t afraid to wax lyrical about anything and everything, creators have been taking to the platform to share their love for the stuff. Surprising? Absolutely. But allow us to enlighten.
The hashtag #PearsSoap has garnered millions of views, with fans raving about its ability to whip away make-up without stripping the skin of moisture. Costing less than a can of Diet Coke, it’s being hailed as a budget-friendly glow-giver thanks to its purported ability to provide that elusive “glass-skin.” And while those who consider themselves beauty mavens are no doubt cynical about cleansing with a bar of soap, its key ingredients are worth shouting about.
Glycerin is well known for its ability to flood the skin with moisture, aiding plumpness and glow, while natural oils can soothe, calm and soften. In an ASMR style video @angeliclofiasmr whispers, 'I used to struggle to keep my skin feeling hydrated, but then I discovered Pears and it has been my go-to for that soft, moisturised glow. My skin feels instantly softer and more hydrated after rinsing.'
But the social media love for Pears goes well beyond function. In this corner of the internet the aesthetics are just as important. In one video by @thefemaleformula a reviewer says, ‘I can see this on someone's sink and I'll think "Ooh, they're clean!" It's giving me clean girl aesthetics!' while another says, 'This would look so nice in the bathroom!'
The soap itself (in all its rich, amber glory) does ooze old-money glamour, especially when paired with the more minimalist, functional looking products of the moment. Each Pears bar is, after all, 'hand-finished, individually polished and then held up against the light to to check for imperfections.'
An opulent touch - especially for a soap that comes in around £2.
