Hailey Bieber Is Trying Out This £25 Retinol Serum And It’s Available On Amazon

It's not just us mere mortals that suffer with retinol sensitivity. In a recent interview on her new YouTube franchise - Beauty Tips & Tricks - with YouTube and TikTok sensation Hyram Yarbro, Hailey Bieber told viewers all about the woes she has faced when trying to get acquainted with everyone's favourite anti-ageing ingredient, the vitamin A derived retinol.

'I have dry skin,' said the supermodel. 'It's really sensitive, and gets red at everything.'

'Because of the skin cells turning over so fast when you're using retinol, I was getting all of these tiny little breakouts,' explained Hailey, 'everyone told me that I was going to have to deal with them until my skin got used to it. But I don't have time to deal with it!'

And Hailey's struggle is a commonplace one. First time retinol users, or those upping the frequency of their applications, often experience side effects that include dryness, flaking and increased sensitivity.

Expert aesthetician Debbie Thomas says the key to no irritation, or less irritation, lies in starting slowly. 'You need to build up your skin's tolerance,' says Debbie, 'begin by using it twice a week for two to three weeks or every third night, and then just shorten the gap between uses.'

Hyram agrees. 'If you're using retinol and you're consistently seeing purging, that’s your skin reacting - it’s sensitivity. I would start using retinol once a week, see if your skin can handle it, then work your way up in strength. With most retinols, I would say use every other night at the most, but you can use it every day if you want. I just think it’s important to give your skin a break from that constant cell turnover, it can be really aggressive to your skin.'
