Combination skin means that your face exhibits two or more different skin types at the same time. For example, an oily t-zone and dry cheeks (which is, by the way, very common). Dr Justine Hextall, Consultant Dermatologist, explains ‘due to the distribution of the oil secreting glands on our face, we all have combination skin to some degree, and it’s really important that we treat all areas correctly.’
This type of skin can also be irritated by an extensive skincare regime. ‘It is very tempting to use heavy, often alcohol-based or foaming cleansers when oiliness is a concern,’ says Hextall, ‘the issue with this is that the skin barrier can become unbalanced and in fact produce more oil to compensate.’
To give us the low down on how to treat oily and combination skin, Hextall shares her top tips and tricks. We’ve also rounded up the best skin-savers that are worth every single penny…

What skincare routine would you recommend for combination skin?
'First up, always use a gentle face wash that matches the skin’s natural pH,' advises Hextall. When skin is rinsed it should feel calm and hydrated not tight. 'Next, use a serum packed with antioxidants to protect the skin against daily stressors and help the cells to regenerate. After the serum has been absorbed, apply a light moisturiser (preferably a lotion or hyaluronic acid gel) to boost hydration and maintain that glow.'
Exfoliationis helpful to remove dead skin cells and excessive oil. Hextall recommends exfoliating no more than twice a week and often a hot flannel rubbed firmly over the skin will effectively remove any build up.
How should you treat acne if you have combination skin?
The same rules apply: 'A gentle wash stops the skin becoming too dry and sensitive. Salicylic acid in washes and masks works to both breakdown the build up of oil and soothe skin. Benzyl peroxide also helps to unblock pores and reduce inflammation. Interestingly, studies have shown that benzyl peroxide reduces vitamin E in skin - a natural anti-oxidant, so I always recommend applying a light vitamin E cream when treating acne.'
How should you deal with areas of dry or flaky skin?
'Gently exfoliate skin once or twice a week. Follow with a calming and hydrating mask packed with ingredients like vitamin E, glycerin, salicylic acid, calendula and aloe vera.'
Also, remember it may be your cleanser that's unbalancing your skin so opt for a cleansing lotion which you can rinse off with a mineral water spray like Avene Eau Thermale, £13.
What is the best way to cover up a shiny t-zone?
'Personally, I recommend Dr Feelgood Mattifying Balm by Benefit, £29. It removes shine and minimises pores in oily areas. Skin looks smooth and flawless without appearing dull and powdery, perfect for combination skin,' recommends Hextall.
If you have combination skin, what should you look for when buying foundation?
'Avoid heavy coverage and powder formulas as powder compacts will highlight areas of dryness and make skin appear dull and lifeless.' Hextall loves Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, £33.50, as it reflects light away from problem areas giving the illusion of clear hydrated skin.
