There's no denying mascara is an incredibly personal thing. Perhaps you're someone who prefers subtle definition - a wash of brown or a coat of clear. If you're anything like me, however, you're only content with big and bold. The bare necessities? A blacker than black formulation, the ability to create amped-up volume, and the promise of length. It shouldn't be too much to ask. But often (as panda eyes of the past have confirmed) it's trickier than you might initially think. I've been testing mascaras for the past few months and one in particular has come out on top - the Lancôme Hypnôse Drama Mascara, £29, which is, according to the brand, a 'new and improved' version of the original. Bonus points, as it's in the Black Friday sale.

What does the Lancôme Hypnôse Drama Mascara do?
Those familiar with the original Lancôme Hypnôse Drama will be well aquatinted with its lash lengthening and volumising prowess. But what is it, exactly, that makes this one so different? According to Lancôme, it's all in the below:
-
17x more dramatic volume and fuller, stronger-feeling lashes.
-
2% bonding complex embracing lashes in care.
-
The legendary S-shaped Hypnôse Drama brush coats lashes from root to tip.
-
Deep onyx pigments for smouldering, kohl-like intensity.

Customer review: 'I was nicely surprised by this mascara. I typically don’t use volumising mascaras because I like more of a lengthening product — but this mascara sort of did both — with the added benefit no smudging or raccoon eyes even in 90 degree heat. I’ve also noticed that after 12+ hours of wear it’s still going strong. I received this as sample to try from Influenster but I would absolutely buy this when I run out!'
Pros
- Suited to sensitive eyes
Cons
- Can 'spider' a little if layered up too much
How we used it:
Rachael Martin, beauty editor:
'When applying mascara I like to wiggle the wand at the base of my lashes before gently dragging it through the lengths to create fanned-out volume. I like to layer, and while this is buildable, it does dry down quickly, so you'll have to work with haste to avoid a spidery finish.'
Our verdict:
'Big, bold lashes are my MO– and I’m pleased to say that this mascara really delivered the "oomph" that I crave. It applies beautifully, doesn’t flake and such a small amount tends to go impressively far. The brush is easy to work with, coating even the smallest lashes with an even layer of the formulation. I have oily lids (prone to considerable transferring) but this mascara didn’t budge even during the sweatiest London commute of all time – more on that another day. For those also looking to achieve fluffy, fanned out lashes then I’d absolutely recommend. It’s a lash-lovers dream.'
Final thoughts:
It’s often frustrating when a cult classic becomes reformulated. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? Wrong. Lancôme's Hypnôse Drama Mascara provides bigger, better lashes with minimal effort. And I, for one, am most definitely sold.
