The Most Divisive Makeup Trend From The Noughties Is Back. But This Time Around It’s *Whisper It* Actually Wearable

Millennials assemble!

As a certified member of Gen Z I look at the noughties makeup trends and can't help but think that there was a serious case of makeup blindness going on. Sorry, not sorry! Thin brows, ghostly complexions and loud blush were all regular features on the red carpet but it was concealer lips that has me shivering in my ugg clogs. Anaemic lips with the texture of cement is the image reference the aesthetic calls to mind so you can imagine my shock when I saw that the pale pout cropping up on my TikTok and Pinterest accounts. However, there's a key difference to the OG look popularised in the 2000s; far from being a brash statement, concealer lips in 2024 are subtle and muted. In fact, I'm quite tempted to give the look a go myself.

Ever since her star-studded wedding last year, Sofia Richie has earned herself the title of IT girl, for both fashion and beauty. Back in October, the A-lister posted a tutorial of her go-to lip combo, which racked up a staggering 3.9 million views. To the internet’s surprise (Millennials assemble), she reached for concealer as the final step in her routine. But instead of dousing her lips in the product, she blended the concealer out with her fingers, achieving a highlighted look in the centre of her lips, which we must say is much more flattering than the pout plastering version of 15 years ago.

Gone are the days of the harsh pasty pout, replaced instead with the - much more flattering - ombré edition. Looking to jump on the trend? You're not the only one. According to Pinterest’s Autumn 2024 Trend Report search for concealer lips is up 92% and is expected to only increase as Autumn rolls around.

In fact, hundreds of creators are making like Sofia Richie and using their concealer as a lip product. They key to avoiding the same ghostly mistakes as millienials past? Add a lipgloss, or a lipliner in a different shade. I have to admite, tt looks quite good. Here is an easy step by step...

Concealer Lips 2024 Hack:

  1. Prep your lips: Exfoliate and moisturise your lips for a smooth canvas

  2. Apply a base: Use a nude pinky lipstick or lip tint as a base to even out your lip colour.

  3. Apply concealer: Dab a concealer that matches your skin tone onto the centre of your lips.

  4. Blend: Use a makeup brush or your finger to blend the concealer outwards, creating a gradient effect.

  5. Extras: To spice up the lip, consider adding a gloss or a liner.

To avoid the dreaded flakey, crumbly concealer lip of the noughties you need a base that is hydrating, nourishing and not at all drying. Meet our favourites below.
