Two mascara camps have emerged so far in 2024; team mascara all day every day, and team bare lash. The latter, fuelled by the charge of the 'clean girl aesthetic' and vocal mascara naysayers such as Molly Mae, has gained so much traction that it's spawned an entire 'no mascara' movement. A-listers have been swerving lash paint too.Rita Ora and Emma Chamberlain brought full glam to the Met Gala but went without mascara. And for me personally, as a makeup lover I've often struggled with mascara. Too heavy, crunchy and too much danger of fallout. But then I tried the new Charlotte Tilbury mascara and I might have found a reason to switch camps.

The Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-Eyes Mascara, £29, which has just launched exclusively on the brand's app, promises everything you would look for in a good mascara: nine times more volume, two times more curl and a double lash effect. The result? Bigger, thicker and longer lashes – a finish which beauty mogul and brand founder Charlotte Tilbury declares is 'what everyone wants for their lashes.'

Having been responsible for many of the most coveted make-up looks on runways and red carpets for decades, when it comes to knowing what women want Tilbury is certainly clued up. And, for the makeup maestro herself, mascara is one of the cornerstones of any makeup bag.

'When I discovered mascara, it transformed my confidence and changed my world. Lashes frame your face and enhance your natural beauty, symmetry, and sex appeal! I have studied the alluring eyes of every icon, star and supermodel and siren – they all know the power of lashes! I looked at that perfect lash architecture and symmetry, the length, extension and curl. Those eyes are magnetic, darling! They hold your gaze so you just can’t look away!'

What makes the new Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-Eyes Mascara so good?

The creation of this tube of mascara has taken 10 years and has seen over 200 combinations. Taking notes from the haircare world, Tilbury has produced a mascara that boasts the lift and curvature of a heated tong, the long-lasting bold shade that can only be mixed by a colourist and the smoothing, detangling and thickening effects of world-class haircare products.

The lash transforming results are all down to a clever formulation which contains the brand's innovative Lash Vinyl-Black Wrap technology. The flashy tech contains lash-plumping polymers that coat every lash to add volume, thickness and create a fanned-out effect. Plus, the glossy vinyl-black inspired pigments deliver an uber-dark hue that make all eye colours pop. The added conditioning benefits of jojoba waxes also means lashes are future-proofed and well looked after.

The wand itself is a carefully considered piece of engineering, too. Ultra-curved with very fine, laser-cut bristles that are dual textured with a soft side and a sharp side, it hugs and grips the lash bed to separate and treat each hair, to provide a seamless distribution of root-to-tip volume. The dual tip means the mascara gives you have more control, a clump-free finish and works with any lash type, whether you have curly, sparse, long, straight or short lashes.

This mascara promises to suit all, whether you have a very specific type of growth - curly, sparse, long, straight or short lashes - or if you have a penchant for dialling your look up or down. That's all thanks to a clever formula and well-engineered brush which works on all hair types to create a bold (or light and fluffy if you please) lash look that lasts.

Our honest review of the new Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-Eyes Mascara

It takes a lot for me to break my no-mascara rule, but this proved to be the antithesis of all my mascara woes. The clever wand meant I could create the only kind of lash I ever really want to wear (light, fluttery and fanned out), thanks to a very curved brush head that fits right around the contour of your eyes and the double textured bristles which provides more precision and a chance to create a more personalised lash look. That said, on the off chance I wanted a more dramatic look for an evening out, I could reach for this to get the job done, too.

While the packaging is heavy and clunky, the wand and the formula itself are anything but. And, that dreaded clumpy, crunchy, heavy feel of traditional mascaras that leave a sprinkling of fallout? I'm happy to confirm Charlotte Tilbury's Exagger-Eyes Mascara is a far cry from that.
